Wilde on UK TV
'Wilde' is showing on BBC4 this Friday night at 11.40pm int he UK, as part of a Stephen Fry tribute weekend. It's just possible that Ioan will pop up in the documentary beforehand too, as they are interviewing frinds and colleagues about working with Stephen.
I will be in hospital, so will miss it, but I hope someone can catch it. i have the DVD already and it's a good film in its own right. Not much of Ioan, but there are glimpses of a baby Orlando Bloom and alot more of Jude Law, of course. Stephen is superb in this film - I think he was born to play Oscar.

Hi Stevie, First, I want to wish you the best next week :nurse :nurse , I'll be keeping you in my thoughts as, I'm sure, we all will! :nurse :nurse I've never seen "Wilde", so I took the plunge and ordered it today. I know Ioan's part is minimal, but I think I'll find it interesting to snoop a little bit more into the life of Oscar. (When I used to teach, I used excerpts from some of his works for writing style illustrations. I had to take some other roads in life when I developed tremours in my hands that keep me from doing some things I used to do.) Anyway, We'll see how Mr. I looks in THIS one-----------pretty young and beautiful, I've heard--------and long hair, too (don't know about THAT!) Take care------------ :thumbs up

Another Ioan film I haven't seen, but I do want to send "get well quick" wishes your way, Stevie. Hope things go smoothly for you. Take care :)

I've rented it a few times and have to agree with Stevie that I would consider it a great film even if Ioan wasn't in it. His part just makes it better.
Jeep - it can be found in the U.S. region format and can probably be rented through Netflix or Hollywood video or Blockbuster. It's worth the rental. Though Ioan in long hair and the funny little hat is not my favorite look for him.

Aw, thanks for the good wishes, Matie and Jeep:hug
I love the Oscar Wilde quote on the front of the Region 2 copy:
"We're all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars."

I hope all goes well for you while you're in hospital, Stevie. Is there a way you can sneak a TV set in your room so that you can watch Wilde on Friday? In Italy, it is often possible and sometimes hospitals have TV sets in their rooms.

Thanks, frances :hug Much appreciated. I suspect my 'room' will be a 4-6 bedded bay (this is the NHS, remember!) One wag at work quipped "You'll be the youngest person on that ward by forty years!" and he used to work there, so he should know.
However, it does so happen that our Trust has something called Patientline, which is a sort of pay-per-view TV (£10 for 3 days) which includes a phone and - I've just discovered - the internet! It's all on a module that swings over each bed. Yippee! I'm not sure iof it's just the basic 5 channels; if so, I won't get BBC4, but I hope so!
These services are free on the children's wards, but we don't have them in PICU, for obvious reasons, so I'm a bit green. I'd love to see the Stephen Fry documentary..... I remember Stephen introducing Ioan at the Baftas one year as "The most gorgeous young man I've ever had the pleasure of!"
Stephen has also been very open about his bipolar disorder and made a fascinating documentary charting it's progress (and that of others')last year. Catch it if you can!)

I did catch Wilde on the Logo channel here in the US a few weeks back. I tuned in about an hour into the film, but didn't see Ioan. Where is his part in the film?
Gaffer'sGirl- 08-15-2007
Mazee, He plays John Gray whom Wilde uses as inspiration for the main character in his work, A Portrait of Dorian Gray. Ioan didn't have a large number of scenes, but he made a big impression. All of his scenes were in the first half of the movie. Hopefully, you wiil get to see it someday.

I watched "Wilde" for the first time today. I was doubtful about how I would respond to it, since I already had a general rundown of its content and about how lengthy Ioan's role was in it. (Not nearly long enough at all, mind you!) He is only involved in a few brief scenes, but performs them very convincingly and interpretatively. One can sense John Gray's feelings of attraction, admiration, arousal, infatuation, jealousy, and then, ultimate rejection and torment in his brief and disillusioning boy-toy tete-a-tetes with the beguiling Mr. Wilde. ------(A lot of this is done with Ioan's eyes and facial expresions alone! Rather like a small 'portrait of Dorian Gray, perhaps?)-------------I had feelings of sadness for Ioan's character when he tells Robbie of his loss of paramour.----------------- As for Steven Fry in the title role, WELL, how can one come as close to impeccability as THAT, huh?! One thing i've always liked about Oscar Wilde's work is his fabulous way with words... turning a phrase with him is like taking a bite of moist, delicious chocolate cream cake in one's mouth and allowing all the textures and flavor to slide leisurely over the palate and slip smoothly down the throat.------------------- I wouldn't recommend that everyone see this film (Over age 18 would be better, and as I've said before, I don't know how much all the nudity adds to the story.) BUT, the part of Wilde was played so well, with compassion and insight. Fry looks stylishly smart and stately in his clothes, and quietly foppish in manner (at the beginning, especially). His story keeps one wondering what will happen next.-------------- I enjoyed the portrayal of his wife, too. She was most compelling in her performance as the long-suffering spouse, with an iron-clad spunk. The music in this film is lovely and a bit haunting.-----------Jude Law seems suited to the role of a perfectly beautiful.self-absorbed, aristocratic snob, who helps lead Wilde down his complex road to perdition.

Whoaw! What a good review. Could not agree with your more. I watched it because it had Ioan in it, but found myself so captured by the story and the acting that I 'forgot' about Ioan alltogether. Knowing Steven Fry only as a comedian, I was rather surprised by how good an actor he was. I am not bothered by the nudity. I think it belonged to that period of time, where in one way things were still hush-hush and at the same time people wanted more openess, but agree, it should be a movie for 18+.
And indeed Ioan is doing a good job with this character. He has a small part, but certainly not an insignificant one!
