With the Holidays rapidly approaching I started thinking about what food I crave the most that makes it feel like Christmas. My choice - cut out Christmas cookies with frosting on top and sprinkles. We would use my Grandmother's recipe and as kids, my many siblings, two cousins and I would sit around the table and decorate a couple hundred to share with neighbors and to eat. We each got one special gingerbread type style cookie to decorate (and eat) however we wanted. Especially during our pre-teen years, the cookie ending up more icing and decorations than cookie. So, what food brings up your favorite memories of the holidays? We also stuffed dates and rolled them in powdered sugar, which always seemed like an endless task - no wonder Mom had us do that!

Isn't it funny how things from your childhood stay with you? My mom used to bake apple pies and she ALWAYS made me,what she called a 'special' little pie--of my very own--one of those small tins about 3 or 4 inches in diameter. Then when it came time to eat it,she'd also put a little scoop of vanilla icecream on top too! YUM-O!

My Grandma made one of those small pies for me a few times. It really made me feel special.

Isn't it funny how things from your childhood stay with you? Definitely so! I hold fond memories of my grandma's lemon pie... I must have the recipe somewhere... off trying to dig it out...

I love lemon pie. Yumm!

Well, I bought a box of Captain Crunch the other day and I'm loving it. Of course, the roof of my mouth is scraped up. Anyone who has eaten them will understand that comment. Anyone else like CC? It's like revisiting your childhood.

Shipmate- 06-24-2009

It's awful,GG,but I've never had CC!!!!! I KNOW,I'm a dork! :dunce:

It reminds me of spending a few summer days at my great-aunt's by the lake in Indiana. A very carefree time.

Cherry Kool-Aid can make me feel that way about being at my grandmother's in Kentucky as a kid, too,GG. It didn't get much better than that,in those days, you know.......

Gaffer'sGirl- 06-27-2009

Always thought I'd be a Kool-aid and cookies (Tollhouse of course) Mom for all the kids in the neighborhood including my own. Funny how life turns out different from our childhood dreams.

This is no time to be asking what I'm craving! I have had no chocolate or crisps for over eight days! :help:

Gaffer'sGirl- 06-27-2009

What a good girl! Must be working on your figure for your trip to the US.

StevieT- 06-27-2009

You got it, GG! Trying to work on my stamina, too....wish me luck! Now, I'm off to sniff a chocolate wrapper........

Gaffer'sGirl- 06-27-2009

You're doing much better than I. Although it is hard to convince yourself you don't deserve a treat after pushing shopping carts in the parking lot for four hours like I did yesterday. It's about the equivilent of pushing ten shopping cars for five miles. I suppose that does meet my exercise requirement! Now if I can just watch those calories going in.
