Was it or wasn't it? **SPOILER ALERT**
Ok question!! Having just watched this............was it suicide or accident?? Thoughts welcomed!  Susie D PS: Sorry if this was discussed before but I'm a newbie to the forum.

Hello Miss SusieD, Welcome to the forum! Glad to have you with us, and hope you'll have lots of fun here !! In response to your question, I think Phil was SO overwrought with anger at Soames for his whole lack of spousal committment, passion for Irene's recent abusive treatment in her near loveless marriage, and his OWN youthful exuberance that he just plain was boiling-mad.......and ran out in front of the oncoming carriage! Poor baby, poor, poor, Baby!

Gaffer'sGirl- 09-03-2007

SPOILER *** It's been awhile since I watched it but I have to agree with Shipmate. The crowed streets and Phil's anger and anguish created a situation where he wasn't watchful enough of his actions. Susie, you might want to edit in a spoiler alert on your post since your question involves a vital plot point. That way if someone hasn't viewed FS yet they won't run across. Not likely to happen, but just to be safe. Thanks, GG

Thanks for that! Sorry GG  New to all this so I'll remember that for next time! Susie

Mhmm, had to dig up my memory on this, but I, too, believe it was an accident. But I have to admit I saw it only once and never again. Not my favorite movie. Soames is so  :halloween:. I got really annoyed with him. I can understand Phil. I'd like to :censored Soames, too. And I don't even like his wife.

Sorry GG  New to all this so I'll remember that for next time! Susie No problem. Thanks for doing that. I just know there are people who don't like to read about vital parts before they see the movie. Hope you enjoy the discussions. GG

I think it was an accident because after he's been run over, if you watch his lips closely, he actually mouths the name "Irene" twice before he dies. And anyone who is as in love as Bossinney is, wouldn't go out and deliberately get himself killed. Soames and James tried to make it look like suicide to protect themselves from an ensuing scandal, is my guess.

I am inclined to believe Bosinney being run over by a cab was an accident, too, because he would have fought for Irene rather than commit suicide. Soames might have tried to make it look like suicide to protect himself from the ensuing scandal or to keep Irene, who knows.

Yes, I'd plump for accident, just from watching the actual event itself - he's clearly distracte and just steps out....Soames sees an opportunity to discredit him and grabs it.

Thankyou all. i have just rewatched it with my daughter (who is now hooked on it). I start to think that it was convenient for Soames to suggest suicide, especially to cover his own tracks in what he did to Irene. It is interesting how Bossiney's legacy in the house he built and also his relationships with both June and irene keeps popping up throughout the first series. Thanks again! Susie
