Warriors
So I just finished Warriors last night, and, since there are no threads to browse, :( I guess I'll just have to start a new one. :)
Well, it was ...rough, I suppose. If you've seen it, you understand. It was certainly well-acted all around (though my American ears were having a bit of trouble understanding a few bits of the fast-paced, heavily accented dialogue. --Hey, just curious, does that ever happen with you all from the UK or Australia regarding American accents, or is this a one-way handicap?) but how could it not be well-acted with Matthew Macfadyen (I'll confess, though I knew him--Darcy!!-- I had to Google his name just now), Damian Lewis, AND Ioan? It's one of those movies that tends to leave me with few words. It's like, if I thought about it too much, it would be damaging and, ultimately, unhelpful, so I had to just take it in more intellectually. There were moments that got to me, but after a while, it was sort of an overload and the shock started to fade.
Unfortunately for me, I have to say that most 'war/conflict-time bonding' films have really been ruined by the incredible depth and beauty of Band of Brothers. I mean, Warriors, at one time, may have been one of the best war-type movies I had seen, but nothing can really compare now. It actually seems almost unfair. For example, I was at a National Day of Prayer gathering today and, at one point, they asked all veterans to stand and be recognized. They just simply stood and people clapped politely, but I found myself looking at each old, white-haired man and picturing them as those young boys in that series, bantering around one minute and encountering unspeakable horrors the next. Over the years, I have seen the recognition of veterans so many times, but not since watching Band of Brothers has it ever moved me to tears.
Ok, back from the tangent...
Throughout the movie, I kept feeling like Ioan and Damian Lewis should have reversed roles. I'm not sure why. Maybe it has to do with Damian's character in BofB being a lot more like Ioan's character in this. Or maybe it has to do with the ending; for some reason, I just couldn't accept that Ioan's character would make that decision based on the rest of the film. It could be that I'm projecting thoughts of Ioan's other characters onto this character, and, since Ioan is so good with bravery, it's hard to imagine such a cowardly decision being realistic. It was certainly moving, though. That break-down cry there at the end. So good.
Any thoughts, anyone?

Natty,
Have you got hold of a region 1 version, or do you have a multi-regional DVD player? I really want to see this some day.

I would also like to see Warriors one day, but I know what you mean Natty when comparing other war movies to Band of Brothers. B of B is just such an incredible mini-series with a great deal of time spent in building and telling the stories. It's like comparing Amistad to Roots, one is so much more memorable than the other.
Where do you rate Ioan's performance compared to other movies you have seen with him?

I've never had a problem understanding American accents, probably because I've been raised on American movies and TV. I do have a bit of trouble with some English accents though, it takes my ears a few minutes to adjust, if you get what I mean.

I thought the ending worked. I sort of looked at Ioan's character throughout the film as being the consumate soldier among the boys, in that he was the least visibly affected, and never really broke down while in Bosnia. And so it made sense to me that he would be the one to really snap when he got home, as he'd been bottling up so much, and supporting the others instead of taking care of himself. I really liked Ioan in this role, as it's so different from anything else he's done, and he played the role so well.

Hi everyone,
I'm a sort of lurker on this board, but I registered when I saw this thread because I just wanted to let you all know that I uploaded the full Warriors series on my YouTube account. I know how difficult it was for me to find it, so I just wanted to make it easier for other fans. So... until they decide to sue my ass, enjoy.

I'm not usually into war movies, I decided to watch Warriors because it told of a war that took place in a country near to the one I live in and because there are associations in my home town who contributed to the reconstruction process after the war was over. Therefore, I've never watched Band of Brothers and I couldn't compare it to Warriors. This was not an easy movie to watch: the cruelty of war and the sense of helplessness of UN soldiers made me suffer, but I like Warriors all the same. The movie was perfectly built and the actors wonderful. I also think that the ending worked and Ioan and Damien Lewis did extremely well in their respective parts.

Welcome, Maria, and thanks for making this movie available to those who cannot find it on dvd, though I'm sure the BBC wouldn't be too happy if they discovered their Warriors is up there on YouTube in its entirety. I wouldn't leave it up there indefinitely.

Actually, I was loaned a copy that I suppose must've been recorded off a BBC channel. I'll check for you to see if she would be willing to pass it along, but I can't say for sure. :)
But now that Maria has put it on youtube (Thank you Maria!), let me know if you are still interested in borrowing it. :)
Where do you rate Ioan's performance compared to other movies you have seen with him?
Well, I would rate it solid as usual, while being more understated than most of his performances. There were things about the character that bothered me (e.g. his relationship with the married lady didn't seem developed, but that's a script problem, really), but he certainly got my empathy, as he always seems to do.
Maybe it's unfair, but I can't help but weigh his performances based on Wilberforce-- and how can he compete with that?

Yeah, I can certainly see that. I think this is a movie one would have to watch more than once to really catch the subtleties. Another viewing might change my mind towards the ending.

Yeah, like I said, I would like to see it again to weigh the ending, and, yes, Ioan and Damien were fantastic. It was like a parade (albeit a very sad parade) of lovely and talented UK boys. :)
You would think that since the BBC won't make their videos available on Region 1, they wouldn't mind the advertisement for their productions, but they always seem to want them taken down. I don't get it. I mean, if we had the opportunity to buy the DVD, it would be a different story, ya know?
Scotchbonnet- 05-04-2007
Natty,
I'm not ready to borrow it right now. I think I want to wait. I'd really like to own a copy some day. I might even invest in a multi-regional DVD player. Then... look out, I'm going shopping!
And what you said about comparing other performances to Wilberforce. I totally agree (enough to have gone to see it ten times!). I want to see him top that performance one day, but it's not going to be easy, even for Ioan. That role seemed made for him--character, script, cast, direction, production, cinematography--it all came together to help him shine (and he's pretty shiny all by himself).

I understand where you're coming from, and you're absolutely right. Believe me, although it is not the first or last movie to be posted complete on YouTube (far more expensive and well known films are already there), I had given it a lot of thought before I made this decision. However, I felt I had to do it because the message this film conveys and the way in which it is conveyed are far too well done and far, far too important to be hidden away on a virtually unattainable DVD. I will probably take it off at some point, but for now, I think it's, in a strange way, my duty to make it accessibe to as many people as possible.

Ha, I see your (and Maria's) point and I think that the BBC (in this case) should make their videos more widely available if they wanted to reduce the risk of seeing them end up on YouTube or distributed through torrents (where they are accessible worldwide, not just in the regions where dvds are not available, BTW).
I also think that dvds should all be region free: why should anyone care where I buy my dvds, as long as I buy legal copies?
However, the matter is that if you make it available to viewers a substantial part of or whole movies without its producers' authorization, it is their producers' right to want them taken down, even if those movies are not easily available otherwise.

I know that Warriors is not easy to find, while it would deserve much more attention that it gets.

I watched it last night on UKTV Drama. It's the first time I've seen it and I thought Ioan's performace was amazing, especially at the end, I found myself shouting out at the TV "Don't do it Ioan!" :weeping
It certainly opened my eyes about war and how it affects not just the peolpe in a country going through conflict, but what troops have to deal with and how it affects them.

Thank you Maria, (love your O'Moomin avatar ;) I'm a Finn u know)
I'll be watching that too.
How ever, I'd rather buy the dvd if I can find it... About the regions, aren't DVD players on computer region free? I imagine they are, or if not, you can propably make them so.
A few cables (and the computer genius teen next door) and you'll be able to use your computer as a DVD player, plugging it to a tv set.
