Thank you ladies. Frances, I'm not much of a poet myself. I have some trouble with the rhythm and am never entirely happy. This sounded so much better in my head when I was walking by the river. So, anyway, I've changed the last verse this morning and I'll go take a picture of what inspired it. I hope that it sounded both like people and trees. Down by that river, over nigh You’ll see two trees grow side by side From tiny seeds they have grown Each others heart do they own. Forever together, they will abide. Beneath the ground where their roots lie. Down by that river, over nigh. And yes, do another one, Ship!

Frances, I'm not much of a poet myself. I have some trouble with the rhythm and am never entirely happy. This sounded so much better in my head when I was walking by the river. I read your poem out loud (the advantages of having a home office) and it sounded good and your new last verse make it even better.

Thank you, Frances. The compliment is much appreciated.

I just love this, GG! The scene you paint is clearly visualised; so much so, that I'm envying your walk by the river!

Shipmate- 03-19-2009

I really like your revision now, too,GG. The conciseness of it is what is attractive to me,as well as still keeping that great imagery going!

Gaffer'sGirl- 03-19-2009

Thanks so much, ladies. I went for another walk today. Trying to get in shape with some walking and biking. Anyway, it was absolutely gorgeous this afternoon. Blue skys and sun. I took some pictures, but am still having some trouble with my USB ports, so I dont know when I'll get them loaded. Maybe tonight after work.

IN THE MOONLIGHT~~~~~~~~~~~~ An old cassette tape/ Plays "The Girl From Ipanema"./ They dance in moonlight. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ He closes his eyes/ And can smell the jasmine pinned/ In her long, waved hair. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ She is his dream girl./ He never imagined that/ Life could be THIS good. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ She sighs, putting her/ Head on his shoulder, and he/ Puts arms 'round her waist. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ They kiss. The music/ Changes to a 'cha-cha' and/ They giggle softly. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Back through the sand they/ Walk to his convertible./ Love, beach, moonlit night,/ No one else around. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (Reader,YOU decide what comes next. . . . . (wink). :whistle ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ALL THE BLUE CONVERTIBLES HUM DOWN THE HIGHWAY~~~~~~~~~~~~ Yes! Spring! What a day!/ Royal-blue convertible/ Hums down the highway. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Top down,blown-back hair/ Music on the radio--/ Loud. By Aerosmith. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Behind dark glasses,/ Taps out beat on steering wheel,/ Waits for light to change.~~~~~~~~~~~~ Two girls walk by and/ Smile at him. He coolly nods./ And revs-up.....He feels cocky. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chiding himself,he/ Wonders if he might be "too/ Old" to act this way. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ But,he doesn't care./ No "Mid-Life Crisis" for THIS/ Boy!! No,Sir,...no way! ~~~~~~~~~~~~ He has a great life./ Wife still loves him;kids moved out,/ He hasn't a care...... ~~~~~~~~~~~~(.....Except for what the/ Doctor told him yesterday. . . .)/ He knows he'll be fine... ~~~~~~~~~~~~ He HAS to be fine,/ Doesn't he? He has to be fine---/ He.....has.....to.....be.....fine. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Yes,Spring, what a day./ And,all the blue convertibles/ Hum down the highway.

Oh! The first one, oh so tempting. The Blue Convertible took an unexpected turn, quite a shock, but very well written.

Gaffer'sGirl- 03-25-2009

Here are the trees that inspired the poem I wrote. Don't they look like two lovers to you? Ok. maybe it's just me.

StevieT- 03-25-2009

I see exactly what you mean, GG! That whole picture has a rather ghostly feel, too. I was thinking about soldiers today, for several reasons and composed this poem in my head as I walked back from Wallsend, our local shops....(it needs some work, but this is the original draft) A Sonnet For a Soldier Behind your shadowed eyes I see the glory. Beneath your trembling touch I feel the pain. Beyond your aching heart there lies a story; Forgotten now, some leafy lovers lane. In the darkened corners coldly lying, Wrapped around your faithful, tortured mind You hear the lonely, wanton voices crying. Shreds of love and friendship left behind. Speak not to me of friends in dire grave, Who's faces still upon your waking scream. Come here to me my darling soldier brave And tell your mother what it is you dream. Speak only of your deepest heart to me And let your valour set it flying free.

Gaffer'sGirl- 03-25-2009

Wallsend must be a place where many battles were fought in the past. This makes me think of rain, gray skies and a moment of reflection in a soldier's life where the loss of companions and pain wondering of another life catch up to him. And of the love of a Mother who wishes to take away that pain. Knowing the soldier's sacrifice second hand from my Dad and his friends, it evokes in me the same feeling as seeing a Soldiers' monument or standing at Little Big Horn knowing the loss of life and that all the combatents on both sides were once young boys playing out in the garden. Guess you done good with that one. Funny as I was reading your poem in the background I could hear a song "Peace" by Extreme. My first time hearing it. Rather melancholic and felt appropriate.

StevieT- 03-26-2009

Much appreciated, GG. I don't know that song - must investigate......

Gaffer'sGirl- 03-26-2009

The song is pretty new and I'm not sure all the words are appropriate, but at the time it just sounded right. Might find it on Youtube.

Shipmate- 03-27-2009

Stevie, I'm very touched by your verse. It's beautiful and tender, speaking of mother's care and love for her child. I like it very, very much indeed. -------------------------------- GG, Those trees DO look like they are up to something, don't they?! Hahahahaha! That's great!!!!
