I thought you ladies may be interested in this snippet from the Guardian recently - I thought it was a lovely idea!
Lovely idea, indeed! Time to start reading and plan a trip to Lancashire...
GNAT0629- 09-22-2008
Gaff - I didn't even think of that. Yeah we could do it that way and just warn those who haven't read them or aren't very far into the book to stay away from whatever we're discussing. Thanks! I don't know why I didn't think of that to begin with. :dunce: So how far have you gotten? Are you still on chapter 14???
Marthe - I'm so excited that you've gained interest in this book from our discussion. That's what's so great about these boards.......people everywhere can share stuff like this and we can all learn from each other and "expand our horizons". I hope you can find a copy there in Belgium. It's really a great read Marthe. I think you would like it. And yes, my mom made my avi/siggie for me. I can't help it. I heart Edward Cullen. And I think Robert Pattinson was the perfect choice for this role. I can't wait to see this movie!
Stevie - I've never heard of those books but I'm always up for a good ghost story. I love reading books about ghosts and hauntings. Is it a series??? This is a really groovy idea too by the way!

Seems to be a series of six books, Gnat! I was only vaguely aware of the books before I read this.....the concept of a 'mass read' around Halloween just took my fancy!(especially as my Dad lives right on the edge of Lancashire in Kendal) I also like the idea of children's books that appeal to adults too - it's like a delicious permission to enjoy something forbidden...... )
Gaffer'sGirl- 09-22-2008
Stevie, A "mass read" does sound like a great idea, especially if it's a series that gets parents and children reading the same book. Lancashire sounds like it's taking advantage of that type of interest the same way Forks is. Merchants in Forks have touristy stuff and there are Twilight Tours. From what I've seen at work, a lot of teenage girls and their Moms are reading and enjoying the Twilight Series.
Marthe - I hope you'll be able to join us in reading the books. The Vocabulary is not too difficult that you may be able to read it in English.
I did read some more last night. Since I don't work today, I thought I'd get further than I did, but I was just too pooped out. I know Ship is much farther ahead than I am.

I am enjoying how Edward is softening up and revealing more of his past and as I suspected why he was so tense when he was around Bella originally. I really liked their Saturday in the country.
When I was young, I wasn't too afraid to fall asleep. Then, in the 4th grade, I was spending the night at a friend's house and she told me that Vampires would come and bite you on the neck at night. To protect yourself you had to put the covers up to your neck. So, I put the sheet up. And then, she said one wasn't enough. It had to be two or the Vampire would take one off and could bite you, but he wouldn't chance a second cover. For the first time, I was really petrified and had to sleep with covers up to my neck for several years even in the hot California Summers. Edward watching Bella at night when she didn't know reminded me of that.

A "mass read"?? Great idea! Sounds good to me. ---------------------------------- Gnat, I'm in the next book now.------ NEW MOON ---------up to Chapter 4! I'll PM ya. (And,I bought ECLIPSE,too.) Love Edward's eyes in your sig,by the way............who do they have playing Bella? I've always been (pardon the pun!) a big sucker for a good vampire story;and, this lady (Stephenie Meyer) really knows how to spin a good yarn, doesn't she? --------------------------------- Edward can always make a reading girl feel appropriately creepy, and I've enjoyed his siblings too, especially Alice. Ioan might make a good Dr. Cullen (Only with dark hair!!),don't you think?
Gaffer'sGirl- 09-22-2008
Gnat and I had that same conversation about whether or not Ioan would have made a good Dr. Cullen and as you say sans the blond hair.
Shipmate- 09-22-2008
Ooooooooooo, yeah! Can't you see him working those eyes??!! And that smile?........... Yum!
Gaffer'sGirl- 09-22-2008
The eyes - yes, the smile - yes, and his demeanor - gentle, kind, but with the ability to put a slight touch of danger beneath it all. At least we have our imaginations. Carlisle is far from blond in my visualizations. I just plop Ioan in there.
Shipmate- 09-22-2008
Yes,there's always that inkling that the "old longings" could possibly emerge,if just the right scenarios presented themselves. There's where lots of the creepy factor comes into it for me. What BETTER way could there be to "succumb" than under Dr. C's friendly smile, heh?
GNAT0629- 09-23-2008
Ok Gaff - yes. I loved the meadow scene!!!! It's I think my favorite part in that book. I like your story by the way. Vampires biting your neck! Indeed!  Although if it were Edward, yowzah! No problem! You do realize that that chapter (in the meadow) is the dream Stephenie Meyer had that started this whole series off right??
Matie - WOW!!! I told you you wouldn't be able to stop. I'm glad you're liking it. But yes PLEASE email or PM me about that. I'm dying to hear your reaction because I'm fairly certain you've gotten to the most surprising part of the book. So I'm VERY curious to know your reaction to what's happened. I agree, we all love Alice Cullen. Isn't she too much??? And I really like Emmett as well. He's so likeable and funny! But yeah I think besides Edward, Alice is my favorite Cullen.
Oh and how much do you love when Edward would get jealous?? In the first book I'm talking here. Especially with Mike Newton??? I thought that was funny. Edward's this drop dead gorgeous, perfect guy........and a vampire who could kill Mike without doing much.......yet he was always so jealous of Mike. LOL
Anyway, yeah I think Ioan could have played Carlisle very well. But I'm not sure if he still has that youthful look about him. Remember Carlisle was bitten when he was in his early 20's and he's playing the part of an early 30's doctor there in Forks. But like the rest of them, he's very young looking. I'm not sure if Ioan could have pulled that off. I'm also not sure about the blonde hair on Ioan. :hide :dunno But personality? Yeah he could have done it.
Oh and Matie - Kristen Stewart is playing Bella Swan. And from the trailers and pix I've seen, I think she was the perfect choice. In fact, I feel they got the casting down very well for this movie. And thanks for the compliment on my siggie, my mom made it for me. She's so very talented that way! PM me soon Matie!!!!

*************************SPOILER ALERT **********************************************************
Well, I read late into the night last night. The wind was howling and one of the dogs kept barking. The creaks of the roof brought up a few of those old, creepy memories. Scary, especially since I was reading about Bella's confrontation with James. I'm off tomorrow so I should be able to finish the first book. Definitely a surprising twist and turn to what was happening. Though the bait James placed didn't surprise me much. Meyer's does set things up well so that you can go back and see the clues planted in what she wrote previously.
I didn't know the meadow scene was her inspiration. It did seem the turning point in their relationship.
GNAT0629- 09-24-2008
Gaff - yeah the meadow scene was her dream. She'd had a dream, a very vivid one, about a girl and a boy in a meadow. And they were very much in the beginnings of a relationship, but she was definitely human and he a vampire. And from there the rest of the book came to life. She wrote it in like 3 months or something crazy. But yeah, that meadow scene was definitely where everything changed for Bella and Edward. I love that part of the book. And they have included it in the movie, which is good because obviously it's very important. Plus, it's kinda sexy too don't you think?
Yeah the trap James set didn't surprise me. I saw that coming. But not at first. I did realize when she got the phone call though. How did you like the baseball game though?? Up until the nomads showed up? I thought that part was cute.
Gaffer'sGirl- 09-24-2008
Three months is incredibly quick to write a full book. She must have dedicated a lot of time to it. I know she said she wrote with her baby in her lap. I've tried that with Gaff, but he wants all the attention.
********************************SPOILER ALERT*******************************************************
Well, I finished Twilight last night. I enjoyed the book a lot. I was glad Meyer filled in all the blank spots such as how they could reasonably explain what happened to her parents, yet she left a few points to spur you on to the sequel - Jacob and Billy's concern. It's enough to make you wonder if Bella still doesn't know about some aspect of the Cullen's. And if the vampires can live eternally young with special gifts why is Edward so adament about Bella not changing? It seems there must be more to it than just the fact that he misses being human and re-experiencing humanness. Does he fear that Bella may not be able to exert the control that the Cullens do and that she could actually become a practicing monster? I'll be on to reading New Moon to find out.
GNAT0629- 09-25-2008
Gaff - oh I'm so happy you finished it and you liked it! I've got you hooked now don't I? Well Stephenie Meyer does anyway. Yeah you will definitely have to keep reading the series to see Edward's point on not wanting Bella to change. BUT.........be prepared for New Moon. It's going to throw you for a looper! It did me at least. New Moon is especially important. It's a very pivotal book and absolutely necessary to read in order to continue on to the final 2 books. Oh and see if you can guess the reason behind the book's title.
So what did you think of the prom though?? Kinda funny wasn't it?? Poor Bella! And Alice with her girlyness. So cute! Enjoy Gaff!
I'm still waiting to hear Matie's take on New Moon. And I'm wondering if Marthe ever was able to find Twilight over there in Belgium.
marthe- 09-26-2008
Not yet Gnat, but tomorrow it is Saturday and I will have more time to go to the bookstores.
I certainly let you know if it is available in Belgium. If not then I live in an undeveloped country.
