Twilight
Ok so I'm sure many of you have heard the lates phenomenon in the literature world that is now coming to the movies. The Twilight series. Has anybody read these books??? I only just started reading. I'm almost done with Twilight and will be moving on to New Moon probably either tonight or tomorrow.
I have been pestured into these books for some time now. I first heard of this series a couple years ago - I think it was only the first book that had been out. Maybe the second was about to come out. But I was at a friend's birthday party and her (then) 15 year old niece (who is also a Harry Potter fan) was talking about it. Her mother had read it and they were convincing my friend to read it. Three years and three books later, I'm finally getting round to it. My mom, my one aunt and a few of my friends have all read these books and LOVE them. So of course my curiosity has grown. I started this book Sunday night. But it was very late anyway so I only got through one chapter. But I've been reading it ever since and almost done. This is a great book. I wanted to not give in to the hype around it, but alas I couldn't help myself. I'm completely won over by Bella and Edward's story. It's so beautiful. And I am now anxious to see this movie in November (now that no Harry Potter will be released - DAMN YOU WARNER BROS.!). I can't wait to see how these two characters are portrayed on screen.
If you haven't read this series yet, I highly recommend it. It's a fantastic and hyponitzing read. If you're a fan of the Harry Potter series, I think you'll really enjoy this story as well. And while the series may be done, I know the author is currently writing a book from the viewpoint of Edward when he first meets Bella. I'm reading the first chapter. She has it (a rough draft of course) posted on her website. It's amazing!

Those books are very popular in our area and I've still not read them. Forks, the town where the story is set is about 70 miles from where I live and Bella Italia which I understand is the setting for date is a real restaurant in Port Angeles about 8 miles from here. I really should read them.
Also the beach they spend some time at is just up the road from the setting of my Shipwreck script (200 years pre - Edward and Bella).
Of course, Stephanie Meyer had never set foot in Forks when she wrote the first book, though she has since then.

I've just bought the first book in the Twilight series and I plan to start reading it as soon as I'm done with Love in the Time of Cholera.
I hadn't heard yet that the Twilight series was coming to the movies, though.

Gaff - yeah I didn't even think of that while reading it! But of course it's in your area so you'll probably relate to it on that level. It's a really really great story. I think you'll really enjoy it.
No Stephenie Meyer isn't from there, but she did look up the most rainy spot in the US for her setting. And from that she widdled it down to Forks, Washington and she's in love with the town. She is from Phoenix which is where Bella (the heroine) is from.
I just saw the trailers posted on the official Twilight movie website. This movie is going to be AWESOME!!!! They have the perfect Edward - played by Robert Pattinson of Harry Potter fame.
Frances - the movie was originally supposed to open in December but now that Harry Potter 6 will be moved to open next summer, they've moved the opening of Twilight to November in the same weekend that Harry Potter was supposed to be. It looks soooo good! I don't know when it will be opening in Europe, I'm not really sure how big of a following it has over there. I do know that it's HUGE here in the States. But let me know what you think when you read it. And also tell me about Love In the Time Of Cholera cuz I've been curious about that book since seeing the movie Serendipity.

It does seem that everyone who reads it has great things to say about Twilight. I just never seem to have the time to get through a book. Too much time spent on IZ, I'd wager.

Oh Gaff well I just finished the series on Monday. UNBELIEVABLE!!! Very well written. It's such a great story. A complete love story that makes my heart flutter and the Independent Woman in me cringe at my fluttering heart. It's unbelievably beautiful. Try to get the chance to read it. I so can't wait for the movie now!!!!
Gaffer'sGirl- 09-03-2008
I did take a look for it, but the store didn't have the first one Twilight. I read a page or two of New Moon and could see why it was captivating. I'll be looking for the first one again in a few days. Movie should be out soon.

The Twilight movie is due out on
December 12 in Italy
December 18 in Spain
January in the Netherlands
January 9 in the UK
January 22 in Germany
Love in the Time of Cholera? Personally, I think it is better than One Hundred Years of Solitude and Chronicle of a Death Foretold (to mention another two well-known novels by Gabriel Garcia Marquez), but I admit I never got very much involved in the story (therefore, I was very slow in reading this book, while I'm usually a fast reader). This has to do with the style Garcia Marquez writes in (it was labelled magical realism) more than the story itself. So my suggestion is to watch Mike Newell's movie (that I liked better than the novel), if you are interested in the story, but this is just a very personal opinion... In the end, Gabriel Garcia Marquez is Nobel Prize winner and his books are loved by many people.

Frances, thank you for that about the book. Maybe I will try the movie first.
As for Twilight the movie, I'm curious to know because I know how huge this book series is here in the States - what's it like overseas???? Obviously it's not going to have the huge opening/success as the Harry Potter series because that was completely global (starting in the UK of course). But since this is largely an American story about American characters written by an American author, I'm just wondering if it's at all big overseas. I can see that the rest of the world is not so caught up in the fanbase as to bump up the openings.......it's original opening was scheduled for December 12th here.
Anyway, well hopefully you can get the chance to see the movie. But you know I'll be posting a little review of it (no spoilers of course for those who wish to see it). These 2 months can't move fast enough!
And I also read yesterday that they've gone back to do some reshooting - and it's a good thing. They've actually added more scenes to the movie so YAY!!!!
Gaff - yes please don't spoil yourself by accidentally reading any of the other books first before Twilight! It would just ruin the whole meaning for the rest of the books. While Twilight itself could be its own entity and Stephenie Meyer could have just stopped with that book - you can't read the last 3 books without first reading Twilight or you won't understand the heart of the story. Which of course is Edward and Bella and their love for each other. So don't ruin it for yourself! It's a great read, very funny at times too. And please please please when you're done you'll have to PM me or something cuz I'd love to know what you thought!

Will do. I took another look today and no luck. Looks like I'll have to check at a few more stores or even the library.
GNAT0629- 09-05-2008
Do you have a Borders or Barnes & Noble by you?? I know even Target has the books as well. And for cheaper than Borders. I'm not sure where you're looking. Maybe in your area it's that much harder because the setting is out there by you in the books?????
Gaffer'sGirl- 09-06-2008
The nearest Barnes and Noble or Target is 70-75 miles away. Not so easy to just drop in on. I checked Costco and Walmart and will keep looking.
Here is an article from our local newspaper that I thought you might enjoy:

From the PDN:
By Paige Dickerson, Peninsula Daily News
Bella Italia, 118 E. First St. Port Angeles, has added Bella's menu choice to the menu.
The Mushroom Ravioli that Bella orders on her first date with Edward Cullen — in which he reveals the details of a day in the life of a vampire — now is available at the restaurant for $18 a plate.
"We had so many people request it that we added it to the menu," said Neil Conklin, proprietor of the restaurant.
"We have people every night requesting it."
Meyer, who selected the restaurant long-distance via Google.com as the place for the characters' date, stops by sometimes when she is in town, Conklin said.
"The last time Stephenie was here, the young women who were fans in the restaurant were trembling," he said.
"But she is really down-to-earth and good natured."

Oh my goodness Gaff! I didn't realize just how OUT THERE in the middle of nowhere you really are!!!! :shock Yes I can see where that could be a problem. If you're planning on buying the book, what about looking it up on Amazon????
Thanks for that article too. That's awesome about that restaurant!
Gaffer'sGirl- 09-08-2008
Funny thing, I just don't think of Amazon. I've never ordered anything through them. My sisters have, just not me. I may take a trip to Silverdale tomorrow.
And yeah! We are kind of in the middle of the land of not much. My brother is trying to convince me to move to Salem, Oregon. He says there is a Video job upcoming and that I should try for it. We'll see.
marthe- 09-09-2008
Gaff, you might be in the middle of nowhere, but you have a beautiful area ! And moving to Oregon, that is far away.
