The Wrong War--my favorite episode
Wanna know what my favorite Hornblower episode is? The Wrong War! Ioan cried when Bonaparte's rebels shot the French school teacher in the back and he just went hysterical! And if you think he was hysterical--you should have seen me! Oh man! Ioan cried! Then when he was talking to Captain Pellew when it was over--oh man, get the Kleenex out! That's my favorite! Lidia

This one really has many little scenes filled with emotion. Btw, did you notice the little scene where Hornblower made a joke to Styles and Matthews and they didn't get it? It seems Hornblower has a sense of humor, unfortunately no one else seems to share his : "What size is the bridge?" HH: "Well I imagine it to be a bit bigger than the river, Matthews" *Horatio chuckling, other's looking at each other in silence, * HH: "cough"

You're right, Painajainen. Horatio did try humor. Sometimes he was just so funny, when he wasn't supposed to be. One of my favorite quotes is: Horatio: "Archie, you have nothing to fear from the enemy." Archie: "They mean to kill us, Horatio." Horatio: "Aye, off course they do...." That scene ALWAYS makes me smile. Or that scene where Horatio complains to Edrington that the horse needs a rudder, and Edrington points out that Horatio should just show the horse who the master is and Horatio mutters that the horse already knows... Ahum, as far as Mariette dying... Well, I guess I am one of those who was cheering and to this day, I believe, that the guy who shot her, should have been awarded a medal for 'smart moves'. Horatio's 'falling apart' was a bit... uh... (how can I put this)...unexpected? Too much, too fast, too soon. But, ( :happy ) there was my Archie saving poor Horatio. Still a very impressive shot, the one on the bridge. I never realised the importance of Edrington giving Archie the order to look after Horatio until I saw someone, on another site, point out that Archie had reached a point where, not only should he take charge if necessary, but he could do it, because he managed to shake a great deal of his insecureties. By saving Horatio like that, he proved he was not a broken man any more. Go Archie! :naughty (Did I ever mention that Archie is my favorite character in HH? :whistle ) Besides it has the most beautiful scene in it of all the episodes. The one in the end with Horatio in the top of the mast with Archie and the other crewmembers in the other mast and the circling around the ship and watch it become smaller... :faint

Sylviane, you are so right with the ending, I think I was shedding tears when I saw it, so beatiful! Not to think of man who is scared of heights up at nearly 100 feet.

When you mention this episode you CAN'T forget the scene with Horatio/Edrington leading the horses into the village: Edrington: You have to let the horse KNOW who's boss Horatio: He already KNOWS!!! Then before that when the horse won't turn......... HORATIO: This horse needs a bloody RUDDER!!!! I always crack up at that one.

The one in the end with Horatio in the top of the mast with Archie and the other crewmembers in the other mast and the circling around the ship and watch it become smaller... :faint That scene always boggled my mind because we know how fearful of heights HH is. As one who is afriad of heights myself, I'll deal with them if forced to, but you wouldn't find me willinging go 40 feet in the air with only a mast, yard-arm and some rigging to cling to. Nu-huh. No way!

:dunno I have often wondered the same, HilJohn. Maybe the look of triumph on his face was because he tried to deal with his fear of heights by climbing all the way up there.... But no matter what. The scene remains the most beautiful to me. :sun
