Interesting take. Thanks annee! Just makes me wish I could see this film. :weeping May I offer my commiserations Stevie? I'm in the same boat, and only wish I could see this film. I love satire - and from the reviews - it seems that the film should have been aired more widely. Is it possible to get a regionless player? I made enquiries once, and was told that they are not manufactured, but that existing players can be adapted for a (not particularly small) fee.

Frances- 10-21-2007

Is it possible to get a regionless player? Yes, it is possible to get one. I noticed there are some for sale on Amazon or eBay and an Internet search may produce a list of other places where you can buy one. Otherwise, you can make your current dvd player region-free: if you note down the brand and model of your dvd player, you can search for hacks that you can apply to make it region-free (there are sites listing hacks for different brands and models).

I recieved it yesterday. Have not yet had a chance to watch it, started the movie but my hubby was coming home. So forget about watching Ioan for a while. (sigh) But I saw the start of the movie and I had my first moment of not knowing whether to laugh or not. I know I'm being silly here, but the suggestion is raised to "Richard" that 'they' want "Lucy Lawless... you know... Xena, warrior princess... " I known Ioan is an actor , but did he really have to look THAT blank?:dunce: Even at the BBC they must have heard about her? She was even parodied by some comedians in the UK. The series was rather succesfull and could not have gone completely unnoticed, particularly not in the TV world this Richard is supposed to come from. Even if Lucy's name had not rang a bell, the series name should have (I think  ) ... Anyway, it made Richard seem so ignorant. I won't tell you more about how the scene unfolds, because it was a rather funny moment and I did laugh. (And personally I should add to this fact that I sat in front the TV and staring at his blank look could not help but think "She's in Battlestar Galactica right now, you idiot, you know the series with one of your other 'best friends' Jamie Bamber...Duh." (toes curling) Maybe had they suggested another actress it would have been funnier for me. :dunno So it must personal and hopefully I'll enjoy the rest of the movie.) Added thought: Just wondering if I'm perhaps more critical of Ioan's performance because of everything. Would I have been just as annoyed about it, had it happened last year..? Does anyone have a couch? :happy

It's good to hear you received your copy of The TV Set, Sylviane, and I hope you'll have the chance to watch it to the end soon. As for Ioan/Richard looking blank when Lucy Lawless is mentioned, I don't know... I guess they had to choose an actress that is famous enough for some to be familiar with her name, but not famous enough to be a household name everywhere and I think Lucy Lawless works fine in this sense. Even where I live, though many people know Xena the Warrior Princess, but I'm afraid not many remember the name of the actress in the leading role.

Gaffer'sGirl- 10-31-2007

My thought on that Sylvianne and Frances was that the Richard character was supposed to have more sophisticated taste and so might not have seen not have seen Xena. Sylvianne, when you see the rest of the movie, I'd be curious what you think about that scene. I'll watch it again and see if I still see it the same way.

Frances- 10-31-2007

I haven't seen the movie yet, so I'm not the best person to tell, but I wonder whether Richard's response to Lucy Lawless being proposed may be one of incredulity rather than ignorance, that is the matter was not that he did not know who Lucy Lawless is, it was that he would not have chosen for the part 'on offer' someone whose main credit is Xena the Warrior Princess. I'm just thinking out loud.

Shipmate- 10-31-2007

I'll try to watch again, too,Syl. You've got my curiosity up now.

Gaffer'sGirl- 10-31-2007

That's not a bad thought, Frances. Kind of rings a bell. I haven't had time to watch the DVD, so my memory goes back to seeing the movie in the movie the movie theater which was months ago.

Hi everyone! Got a copy of the TV set in mail on friday. Exrental copy dirt cheap (3 pounds) from Amazon UK. In good condition. My daughter and i watched it on saturday. Ioan was gorgeous as ever. Add in the 2-3 day growth look and need I say more? :cold shower 1 Even my 16 year old daughter (who announced last weekend that she was going to marry Hayden Christensen of star wars ) commented on how gorgeous he looked and especially in those expensive suits! On a serious note, I thought his character stands out as the only sane and human one in the whole sordid story!! You wonder if his character Richard will stay. Interesting story. Written by 2 guys who have been in the TV business for a while and had their pilots cut. Also an experience Ioan has been through twice so no wonder he was attracted to the script. Humor to me was very satirical. Honestly, a show called "slut wars"!! Made a mockery of TV in America that's for sure. It was border line do you laugh or not? See in Australia we are lucky. There is ratings season but generally in terms of which American shows make it out here or not is all about the networks sitting back to see which ones are huge hits in the states and then buying the rights. Well that's my thoughts anyway. Susie D

Susie, funny to come across your comments right now. I was just listening to the commentary on the movie. *****POSSIBLE SPOILER***** When they speak about that 2-3 day beard growth. They comment on trying to make Ioan look discheveled and how impossible that is to do. The Slut Wars - I remember laughing very hard at the theater, because even though reality shows are not quite that bad; there is the impression that if it made money, any network would jump on doing a show like that. At the end of the commentary, Jake Kasden talks about where the idea came from and why he decided to actually show a scene from the show.

They comment on trying to make Ioan look discheveled and how impossible that is to do. LOL! Discheveled? Nah, not at all! I could think of other words to describe "his look"!! Mmm............need to watch the director's commentary next. Susie

Gaffer'sGirl- 11-11-2007

Disheveled. Ooops. Sorry. I knew that didn't look right, but was too lazy to look it up. Needless to say, he usually looks great even when he's disheveled and in this he looks tremendous the whole way through. Yes, I think listening to the commentary can be very revealing. I listened to the first one, but haven't listed to the Jake and Judd commentary yet. Hope to do that soon. David Duchovny was interesting to listen to also.

Suzi, or Kaitlyn, what region are Australian DVDs? As you got yours from Amazon .co.uk, Suzi, is there hope for a Region 2 version? (Okay, now I'm sounding desperate - that's because I am desperate to see this movie!)
