Thank you Muvidlover - I'll have to check it out.
Great viewing, Shipmate. Have fun!

.......And I did have fun watching this film,GG, although I think I'll have to see it a few more times to,maybe, appreciate it more. Does THAT make sense? I mean, I feel that I missed some good stuff this first time through because I was watching for Ioan,or trying to follow the dialogue, or looking at Ioan and drooling, or SOMETHING, and not paying attention as closely as I should....................Anyhow, I did like the movie (Without the profanity, sorry, but that bothers me with these flicks!), and was drawn to David D's character. HIS FACE was one of the most facinating things to watch throughout the whole story. The farther the story went, the more pained the face got! By the end,he was in so much agony, physically AND emotionally, that his whole body told you exactly how,and what, was going on in his mind----------and THAT is very difficult for an actor to do, but he pulls it off very convincingly here. /////////////IOAN, as well, deserves very good marks for HIS performance. His part was quite large actually, and I was so glad to be seeing him as OFTEN as I was seeing him!! He portrays a very sharp, savvy, yet progressively manipulated network exec who gradually finds himself sucked up by the American television business, and by the end, is a 100% bonified "yes man", who has sold himself out at the expense of his family, and his former good business sense.---------------------He is dripping with charm, diplomatic, and as the story progresses, looks more and more tired and haggard from trying to please everyone at every turn!!!!! Poor baby!-------------------------------The character of Lennie is so shallow, she is superb! Out totally for the bucks---and ratings---she NEVER relents on driving David D's character further into pain, as he nears his own encroaching, and now, yearned-for "creative suicide"!--------------------------- BUT, this is just my FIRST time seeing the movie,.........

Glad to hear you enjoyed it, too Shipmate. I laughed throughout the whole movie. I love the scene in the car with Lennie telling the airplane story to Richard (Ioan). The expression on his face when she hits the punchline is priceless.
Did you take a look at the extras yet?
Shipmate- 10-04-2007
Ha,ha,ha......yes,GG,the "car ride" scene made me laugh too! Lennie is so deadpan throughout it, and Ioan looks so totally shocked... :rotf: !!!!!!! ----------------------I've only really looked at the commentary between the creators,so far, and found them pretty interesting because it's fun to get a little peek inside the minds of folks such as they, isn't it? Kind of helps how you appreciate the finished work when you understand what motivated them to do what they did in certain scenes, etc. I've always admired learning about the creative process, so hearing these guys talk always draws me in.................

With my experience in film school and then my involvement in the more limited productions of the company I worked for; I enjoy watching the background segments and hearing the commentary, too. It's fun to compare - obviously they can afford more crew, more expensive sets and pre-production time. But when they talk about Baby, 2K's and griflon - you realize its all the same, just more toys available.
Of course, if you compare The TV Set to FF-ROTSS, there are so many more people involved in FF because of the special effects. After watching it, my first thought was I would be so intimidated on the FF set, even though they all seemed like fun people. Then, I remember what an instructor told me - If you can shoot 16MM, you can shoot 35MM; it just takes a few adjustments.

As Mr. Spock used to say: "Fas-ci-nating!" And, indeed it is! (I'm making the Vulcan sign at you right now, GG!!! I'd enjoy so much learning about that stuff. Journalism would have been more my speed, when I was younger, though, I think................(I used to like the pressure------weird, I know!)
Gaffer'sGirl- 10-04-2007
I just talked to my former boss and was reminded once again of some of the things I disliked about the business, mainly financial difficulties. Granted any business can have problems, but video and film production are filled with a fair share of flakes (not my boss, but some clients).
Despite all that I still love much of it and love seeing how they do things. Can't think that I'll ever get back involved in the production end, but I still hope for the writing, so I'm going down to L.A. at the end of October to pitch a story at a Scriptwriting Expo and maybe meet with an Entertainment Lawyer if she is available.
Shipmate- 10-04-2007
Hey, much good luck with all of that!!! Please keep me (us) posted, will you, on how things go?? I hope everything comes out just the way you'd like for it to!!!!!!!!!!!!
Frances- 10-04-2007
GG, good luck with the Scriptwriting Expo. I hope some interesting possibilities will open up for you there.
Gaffer'sGirl- 10-05-2007
Thanks I appreciate your good wishes. I hope thing go well, too. I don't leave until the 23rd, so a few more weeks to finish up some things.
midnightmagicgirl- 10-06-2007
Good luck with your scriptwriting GG
StevieT- 10-07-2007
Go for it, GG! Bet the 23rd is here before you know it. All my fingers and toes are crossed for you - you deserve it! :hug
Gaffer'sGirl- 10-08-2007
Thanks Midnight and Stevie. Emotionally, I can't count on anything until it happens as it is too disappointing, but I certainly appreciate all the good thoughts and crossed fingers. It will never happen unless you put it out there. It's about a 3,000 mile round trip by myself in the car, so I'm just hoping for some good weather and safe conditions.
I'll also be seeing an old roommate and her husband who will be visiting the same friend I'm staying with so it should be a fun time, too. The strange thing is the former roomate only lives 100 miles from me right now and I never see the two of them.
Shipmate- 10-08-2007
Hi GG, That trip, and seeing your friends, sounds like it will be very exciting, and do you good too!! I'm glad you're getting the opportunity to go.

Thanks To My Irish Sister. :)
Hey you guys,
A.V. Club - USA
In her review of the The T.V Set our very own Tasha Robinson criticized Ioan Gruffudd’s former BBC wunderkind character as not adding anything substantive to the film. I politely disagree. To me Gruffudd is the film’s wavering moral conscience, a guy who knows better yet panders to the network’s bottom-feeding instincts as a way of holding onto his job.
There’s a wonderful scene where Gruffud is asked to give a big speech about his network’s upcoming line-up. He hesitates at the very beginning and you begin to wonder if he’s about to launch into a righteous Edward R. Murrow or Network-style tirade against the emptiness of television or the interminable race to the bottom. But no, Gruffudd instead launches into an empty sales pitch for shows he realizes are mostly terrible. Gruffudd’s passivity and reluctance to go bat for what he believes in is almost as insidious and destructive as boss Sigorney Weaver’s oblivious desire to sex up and dumb down everything she touches.
The T.V Set avoids being preachy in no small part because Duchovny is wholly complicit in the creative destruction of his own show: like Gruffudd he could fight for his vision or tell his network bosses that he’d rather not do the show at all than let it limp onto the airwaves a grotesque caricature of its former self. At the end of the day Gruffudd and Duchovny’s instinct for self-preservation and hunger for professional success overrides their better angels.
