I'm sorry. Does this make up for not getting to see Happy Now or Another Life, two of Ioan's best performances? No, not really.
Yeah, they'd be nice to see too... Along with Solomon and Gaenor and Warriors...

Thanks for the tip Gaffer's Girl - I stopped at the Best Buy and had to ask someone where the new releases were - Finally, a girl came out with a copy and told me that they ONLY had three in stock. How weird is that? Maybe because it was in limited release in the theaters, I am guessing.
But I now have my own copy
Gaffer'sGirl- 09-28-2007
I'm glad you found it Gerdie. Our store only had 4 copies and now three.
Kaitlyn and Frances, I was only teasing a litte, I really do hope you get to see it someday. I can't believe they can send people into space, yet can't manage to make one unified format when it comes to DVD's or TV's.

I thought you were teasing a bit,but there's truth in what you said, GG. In fact, there are several Ioan movies that are only available for one region. As for making a unified format when it comes to DVD's or TV's, I think they are perfectly able to do it, so I don't understand why they don't do so. (BTW, wouldn't it cost them less to make DVD's and TV's all in the same format?)

Touche, GG :hug I have to admit to having an extensive Ioan DVD Collection, the TV Set, Great Expections and Poldark being the only glaring omissions.
Of course, this region thing must be about money, but I'm not sure why?
Are PCs regionless?

The official reason is that such coding is a tool to protect copyright and film distribution rights. Movies are often released in theaters in different parts of the world at different times throughout the year. That Summer blockbuster in the U.S. may end up being the Christmas blockbuster overseas. If that occurs, the DVD version of the movie may be out in the U.S. while it is still showing in theaters overseas. However, I've just discovered that region code enforcement has been discussed as a possible violation of World Trade Organization free trade agreements or competition law.
Are PCs regionless?
No, they aren't, but you can find hacks to make them regionless.

Of course you were joking around GG, I was joking back but maybe it didn't seem that way. Sorry!

Your response was just fine. Just wanted to make sure you knew I was kidding around as sometimes it is hard to tell even with emoticons since we can't hear the tone in each other's voice.
Frances - your description of why there are regions is very accurate.
Another issue has been the scan and frame rates on televisions and subsequently ancillary equipment - interlaced vs. progressive - in Europe vs U.S. I've totally blocked the frame rate info out of my mind, but they are different. Also, HD television was available in Japan and Europe long before the U.S. Our FTC has mandated digital only signal for 2009, yet back in the early 90's I can remember going to trade shows where they were promoting HD for the U.S. and nobody wanted to spend the money to transition.
For the reasons you stated it is likely a Universal format won't happen unless there is a way to protect product and make more money than Producers and Distributors do currently.
Of course they've been talking about using Satalite transmissions to movie theaters for a long time, but that requires a lot re-fitting of equipment at the theaters. Most companies don't want to spend that kind of money unless it will make them a lot in return.
As you said, it all comes down to protection of product and MONEY!

Yes, Europe uses PAL video standard with a resolution of 720 x 576 pixels and a frame rate of 25 frames per second, while the US use NTSC with a resolution of 720 x 480 pixels and a frame rate of 29.97 frames per second. In the case of dvd's, NTSC dvd's work fine on PAL dvd players and televisions, I heard it is not as easy to play PAL dvd's on NTSC dvd players and televisions.

Agreed. Unless you prove to producers and distributors that a it is economically more convenient for them to have a Universal format, we are stuck with different formats for different countries.
Gaffer'sGirl- 09-29-2007
Learn something new everyday. I never knew you could play NTSC on a PAL system. To my knowledge, PAL doesn't work on a NTSC player . In the U.S., there are people making good money transforming PAL to NTSC, so it can be played.
muvidlover- 09-29-2007
To my knowledge, PAL doesn't work on a NTSC player ...unless you have a multi-regional DVD player whose remote control has a NTSC/PAL button.

Very cool. It's been 3 1/2 years since I was involved in video production and it was professional equipment with BetaSP, DVCam and DigiBeta. I was actually thinking of tape formats. I know a lot has changed and I'm already behind the times. I was only a techie because I was forced to in order to do for my job, ergo even though I've taken a video engineering class - scan rates, lines of resolution, etc. have to be retrieved from the brain cells farthest back in my brain. :???: This discussion is kicking them back forward.
What brand of player do you have? And where did you get it? I've been looking at Best Buy, Target, Walmart, maybe I should try Radio Shack.

Oops sorry. I don't have a multi-regional tape player. We used to get our PAL tapes converted to NTSC. It was expensive.

I just replaced my old RJTech all-region DVD player with a new RJTech upconvert HD DVD player (model RJ-1000HD) from eBay. Those machines can play anything. :)
