Synopsis: A deadpan David Duchovny and a “flat-out fabulous” (Rolling Stone) Sigourney Weaver topline a “crackerjack cast” (Entertainment Weekly) in this uproarious, edgy peek into the world of network television... where ratings are king, and big dreams don't always fit on the small screen!
TV writer Mike Klein (Duchovny) is in the Prime Time of his life: his show just got picked up by a network, his favorite actor is set to star, and his wife is about to have a baby. But even though his wife is sure to deliver, the Network President (Weaver) might not! After locking horns with the steely suit, the hapless scribe must scramble to maintain creative control, before his beloved project is altered irrevocably, and his entire career winds up in permanent hiatus!
Review:
I think the saddest part of The TV Set is that for all the pokes it take it TV executives, it’s probably no where near as brutal as the truth would be. Not that I have any real life evidence to back that up but lets face it, how many great TV shows are killed by bad choices at the top? Now imagine how many great shows never see the light of day? Probably a mountain of great TV out there vanished into some Black Hole while crapfest like The World According to Jim just goes on and on and on and on and on and on…..sorry had a Pee Wee’s Big Adventure moment there.
I guess the best comparison to make here would be Passion of the Christ…except its in English and nobody’s kicking the son of gods ass, instead its studio bosses kicking Fox Mulder’s ass for wanting to make a real show and taking his passion for it and just crucifying it on the cross of demographics and ratings. They abuse the guy’s dream so much and little by little he sells his soul until he’s left crippled by back pain and sidelined while they steal his little endeavor and add lame punch lines and fart noises.
For a small movie the cast is just off the hook; Weaver, Ioan Gruffudd, and David Duchovny all work so well in this little unholy trinity. Weaver would be the devil, Gruffudd would be a Judas of sorts and that leaves Duchovny playing the role of man.
The movie plays it pretty straight, but keeps it light enough to give it that “Larry Sanders” sort of feel at moments. While it gets chaotic and absurd it manages to keep a straight face. I feel somewhat scared now to even pitch the dozen and a half shows Deez and I have on deck (HINT HINT), but then again…selling out ain’t so bad right?...right?
Overall: A decent little flick about a mans journey through the soulless valley of TV production.
