Red Admiral- 02-21-2009

I went to see 'The Secret of Moonacre' last Friday, when I had a few days off. I was hoping to see it with a friend, but, due to the reduction of performance times, I guessed that it probably wouldn't be on for much longer! If only that brilliant review by the blogger could have been seen by a wider audience, instead of those in the papers, I am sure that the film would have been on longer. Anyway, despite having an exclusive viewing (being the only one there!), I really enjoyed this film. Ioan's performance was exactly right, the costumes were lovely, and the whole film was visually stunning. I particularly enjoyed the fact that it didn't rely on big CGI scenes. I only feel sorry that a lot of people will have missed a treat. It must have been frustrating to have had to cut many of the scenes to fit into the timescale. I only hope that, when the DVD is released, they will be featured in the extras.

I only hope that, when the DVD is released, they will be featured in the extras. My sentiments entirely, Red! I'm glad we agree on the quality of the film. I too suspected it wouldn't be around for long, so went to see it again, the week it opened. sigh. Still, it certainly got my creative juices flowing

Thanks for telling us Red Admiral. :) Thank you too Stevie. I, will have to wait.

Frances- 02-21-2009

Thanks for your thoughts about Moonacre, RA. The Secret of Moonacre will be out in Italy next Friday and I promise I won't wait long before going and see it. On a side note, I think that films are not around in theatres these days as long as they used to. I can remember films being on even for a couple of months, while it is seldom the case for film to be on for over one month,

I'm glad you got to see it, Red. And that you enjoyed it. I really hope they at least release a DVD in America. I would have loved seeing it on the big screen with all those costumes and of course Ioan in that role.

Out of the mouths of babes......... These comments are in answer to CBBC's question "Which film do you think should win an Oscar?" "I think the Secret of Moonacre. Watching a trailer of it made me desperate to be an actress and I still want to be and be in films like that." Eleanor, 10, Hauxton, England "The Secret Of Moonacre. I love this film because it's different and entertaining. The book was fantastic and the actors and actresses played the parts beautifully!" Awe. Out of the mouths of babes. Actually, I've always felt there should be a category for best Children's film or a division between Comedies and Dramas like many awards have. Many well done films are missed because they don't fit the high brow or independent nature of typical Oscar nominated films.

Ahhhhh,AT LAST!! Honest appraisals from knowlegeable critics!!!!! Bless 'em,that's who the movie's truly FOR in the first place..............I love it,hahaha!

StevieT- 02-24-2009

This blog entry intrigued me, not just because the Brewery is my Dad's local cinema, but the task the blogger has set himself (seeing every British feature film released in 2009) He wasn't impressed but seems, again, that the kids enjoyed the film - which, as Matie pointed out, is what it's all about! Discouraging stats, though.... http://everybritishfilm.wordpress.com/2009/02/24/cinema-shows-week-7-the-secret-of-moonacre-14th-february-2009-brewery-arts-centre-kendal/

Frances- 02-24-2009

I like the blogger's idea of visiting smaller cinemas and seeing every British feature film released in 2009, thus supporting local cinema industry and helping independent cinemas survive. I agree with you, Stevie and Matie, that adult viewers and critics seem all too often to forget that children are who Moonacre is mainly for.

Shipmate- 02-27-2009

Ugh! Those numbers don't sound at all encouraging,do they? Maybe some dvd sales will help. I'd be very willing to do MY share to help the 'cause' by having a dvd,OR going to a theater HERE!!!!! Both ideas sound good to me!

StevieT- 03-03-2009

Another 'ordinary' person who loved the movie. To me, Shaka's reasons are spot on! http://shakamovies.blogspot.com/2009/03/secret-of-moonacre.html

Frances- 03-03-2009

I agree with you, Stevie, that Shaka's reasons are spot on. It is clear that she likes fantasy as a genre and she saw the movie from the right perspective.

Gaffer'sGirl- 03-03-2009

She certainly appears to have liked Ioan in the role of Sir Benjamin, compliments the good elements of the movie, yet not glossing over any faults. I just wish I could see that picture of Ioan with Wrolf in front of him a little larger. I don't think it is one we have seen before and it looks rather broody.

I just wish I could see that picture of Ioan with Wrolf in front of him a little larger. I don't think it is one we have seen before and it looks rather broody. You are so right, GG....... Ioan 'magnificently broody' all over the place in this movie..... :faint. I WANT that picture too! (Scampers off on a web search.........) Found it! Thanks to cinemas-online.co.uk But here's another 'brooder' to make up for it.... (thanks to mongstory0815)
