I got tired of waiting-----so,I ordered a ridiculously cheap copy of "The Kid" on amazon.com ---------------------------I see there's also a sequel called "The Kid Moves On" as well. Wonder what role Ioan could play in THAT one????? (I also ordered a Welsh phrase book. Think that will be interesting and fun too! Maybe I'll surprise y'all with some fancy Welsh-talk one of these days!!! Hahahahaha!)

That sounds like fun, Ship. Let us know how The Kid is? I believe that somewhere it said that Ioan was going to play the teacher who inspired the kid to stick to a good path. Was the Welsh phrase book the one by Heini Gruffudd? I've wondered if that might not be some relation to Ioan. Seems to me, in a long ago interview, he mentioned an Uncle or other relation who taught Prince Charles some Welsh. So, it got me to thinking. . . Should say that it is a wild guess, certainly no proof at all. Anyway, have fun with it.

The library where I am didn't have a copy of Kevin Lewis's book,"The Kid",but they are going to get it for me from another library----so,I'll have to wait until it comes in. Should be at least worth a look! My local library didn't have a copy of Kevin Lewis's book either and so did any libraries in my home town. I filled in a purchase proposal form at my local library though, so they should get a copy.

If any of you out there get a chance to read "The Kid" and would like to talk about it------------I'd love to hear what you're thinking. It's really a very powerful book, and a story that lots of people, like me,needed to read. So many little children need soooooooo many people in their lives to guide and love them. Well,....let us know what you think, okay? I'm ready to talk---------look out!!!!!!!

Gaffer'sGirl- 03-26-2009

When I went to Barnes and Noble the other day, they said this book was out of print in the u.S. I may have to try Amazon or wait until the movie gets made as it may turn up on shelves then.

Shipmate- 03-27-2009

Hope so,GG,it wouldn't hurt for a good many people of all countries to read this one.

Shipmate- 04-27-2009

I'm now waiting on my copy of the follow-up book "The Kid Moves On" to shortly arrive. Mainly I wanted to see how life continues for this dynamic young man..................also,to see if his old teacher (Colin Smith) is mentioned again in it in any way. We'll see---------

Gaffer'sGirl- 04-28-2009

Let us know, Ship.

Shipmate- 05-06-2009

ALERT---ALERT--- POSSIBLE SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My copy of THE KID MOVES ON came two days ago. In this one,Lewis writes of his struggle to cope emotionally with the responses to,and public acceptance of, the writing of his story (THE KID). Also, he explores how his family reacts---------and----I haven't read far enough yet......but,I think he may get into the writing and development of the screenplay for this movie that's now being filmed!!!!! I'll let you know. Hope some of you read these two books. He's really an inspiring young man,who had an amazing story to tell----and the good talent to tell it. ------------------------------------------(Ioan's character,Colin Smith,is mentioned in this book as well, and Kevin pays him a lovely homage, for about 2 1/2 pages. I PEEKED ahead a little bit!) :booky:

Gaffer'sGirl- 05-06-2009

That's nice to know that the character Ioan plays was very influential on the main character. Both books sound interesting to me, not just for what Lewis went through, but his observations on writing the screenplay. Hope you enjoy the book.

Frances- 05-20-2009

My local library called me yesterday and they told me the copy of "The Kid" I had proposed them to purchase arrived, so I went pick it today and I can start reading it.

Gaffer'sGirl- 05-20-2009

That's great, Frances. Let us know what you think.

Shipmate- 05-20-2009

Hope you like it,Frances,it's kind of sad going through it ,but is very well-written and Kevin is a very engaging person.

~~~~~~~~~~~ THIS MAY BE A SPOILER FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~You know,I should have posted this long before now,but time got away from me. I did finish reading the second book, THE KID MOVES ON, and found it to be equally as interesting and provocative as THE KID. To tell you the truth,I wanted to see what happened to the author AFTER the first book......... Mainly, the story covers Kevin's very personal reactions to being discovered as a writer by a kind,understanding publisher-----and, the life that begins a roller-coaster ride of emotions for Kevin,and his immediate family,as they wait for the book to come out,and then, the reactions to his story once the book hit the stores. ------------------------------------ Lewis also touchingly tells of his innermost feelings when it is decided that a BBC documentary will be made of his life/background! Not much is spared in the telling as Lewis relives his heinous treatment as a child,along with his brothers and sisters,all at the hands of his deranged mother and alcoholic dad. ------------------------------------ The last chapters of the book deal with Kevin physically confronting each of his parents in a kind of personal mental "showdown", to face his own personal demons which haunted him until finally telling his mother what SHE had to do to save HERSELF. ------------------------------------- I'd give this book a 5-thumbs-up :thumbs up :thumbs up :thumbs up :thumbs up :thumbs up -out of five!!! Certainly,not a book for guffaws and laughs.........but,it DOES make some very valid observations about protecting children and how "the system" often fails those innocents who are caught squarely in the middle of some truly miserable family situations.
