The Hornblower Novel Book ClubAlmost time! We will commence tomorrow, May 31st starting with the first book,
Mr. Midshipman Hornblower.
A separate topic will be started for each book and we will take the books in order of the storyline's chronology. Forester did not write
Mr. Midshipman Hornblower first, but since most of us were introduced to Hornblower through the A&E series which followed the chronology of the storyline, so shall we.
In the beginning, we will give about 3 weeks of discussion for each novel before opening up the topic for the next. I put start dates next to each title. (The dates are in the order of month/day/year.) If more or less time is needed, we can adjust the schedule accordingly.
The order of books is as follows:
Mr. Midshipman Hornblower (5/31/07)
Lieutenant Hornblower (6/21/07)
Hornblower and the Hotspur (7/12/07)
Hornblower During the Crisis (8/2/07)
Hornblower and the Atropos (8/23/07)
Beat to Quarters (9/13/07)
Ship of the Line (10/04/07)
Flying Colours (10/25/07)
Commodore Hornblower (11/25/07)
Lord Hornblower (12/6/07)
Admiral Hornblower in the West Indies (12/27/07)
Needless to say, each book thread will be loaded with spoilers and there's no need to make any sort of alert. But please, let's all keep the comments relating to the specific book so as to not spoil the storyline in later books.
(Even posting the names of the novels is a spoiler of sorts in itself! )
Each discussion will be open and free-flowing. Feel free to post comments, feelings, questions, etc. I'll be adding a "sticky" topic to handle nautical questions ... a glossary which we can build upon as we go along to help each other in understanding the world Hornblower inhabits.
There will be no "close" to discussing a particular novel so new ones can join in at any time. Also, old-timers may re-read and find something new to discuss.
If I missed something, please let me know!
Enjoy, shipmates!!
