The Forsyte Saga
So I was watching the Forsythe Saga again and focusing on Ioan's character more. (The first time I saw it I was not the Ioan fan I am now) His character Bosinney delivers this line to Irene (Gina McKee) that just about sent me over the edge...(dramatic temperment!) Irene - You do love me?? Bosinney - LOVE YOU???!!! I'm prepared to leave everything for you. I would leave this city, this country at a moments notice! I would grub in the dirt with my fingers, sell my soul to spend my life with you...!! Siiiiiiigh

Ooooh, yes, Angela! I'd forgotten that one1

I came across an interesing old thread on IMDB about Ioan's character Phil Bossiney. There were some really heated opinions...LOL I guess I never really thought about the "morality" of the character as I was more swept away with the passion and fobidden love aspect. Very interesting though. FYI spoilers!! You might not want to go if you haven't seen it! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0260615/board/nest/21081837

Phil Bossiney as a questionably crossing-the-line...

Yes, I heard Ioan say in an interview that he himself thought of Bossiney's character as a bit arrogant in regards to his work and love for another's wife... that Bossiney had questionable values, etc. But Ioan played Bossiney so naturally and with such close-to-the-edge of what is and what isn't acceptable in the realm of going only where a heart would lead - that it was easy for me to miss that altogether until I watched it again after I heard Ioan's impression of his own character/role of Phil.

Hmmm interesting. I might have to watch it again with that in mind. I agree that he was excellent in the role.

I think it was Ioan's best roles I loved how much of a rebel his character was and broke the rules of society to be with the one he loved. He may have been a bit arrogant at times but another element I liked was the fact he didn't care about what anyone thought.

Hey! I watched the Forsyte Saga, too and saw all that as well I just hated it when his character, Bosinney, had to DIE! Oh man--when I saw that part, I was like this: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Tearjerker that scene was! Lidia

And they were so close to being able to be safely together in the throws of passionate love. My romatisist heart was cringing...sighhhhh... Yep that was rough.

I wasn't Ioan fan either when I was hooked to the Forsyte saga. When I read in his bio that he was in it I was like, what? who? where? Maybe it was the hair that hid him :) I remember I didn't like his character much at first but eventually cried "nooo!" as well.

If anyone is interested clips from The Forsyte Saga are now available to watch on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ey4XoGZgNwQ this is one of my favourite scenes from the series the dance scene of course.

A little while ago I watched Phil Bosinney meet his very sad death for the second time since 2002...........(sigh....sigh,again!) I can't get those eyes out of my head, especially at the church where he and Irene really start to "see" one another for the first time........(the man can boil your blood, can't he?!) BUT, it IS a forbidden love....................and the historical times in which it is depicted make it all the more poignant, sensuous, and titillating! Bosinney is a cad, but such a smooth one, that somehow you can find yourself not caring about it. He can burn a hole into the soul of Irene with the twirl of a waltz (and a gorgeous one at that!), and still smash the heart of June, and not really mind a bit. It's such a juicy soap opera!!!!!!! Where's my hanky? (I'll finish the second half tomorrow. I've also got Solomon & Gaenor ordered on the way to me very soon-----I'm in for a BBIIIIIIGGGGG box of tissues, aren't I?)

Thanks for the link to the FS clip, midnightmagicgirl. BUT, it IS a forbidden love....................and the historical times in which it is depicted make it all the more poignant, sensuous, and titillating! How true! I was thinking that Ioan makes a wonderful "other man": in Another Life, Ioan's character falls for a married woman... another forbidden love... I've also got Solomon & Gaenor ordered on the way to me very soon-----I'm in for a BBIIIIIIGGGGG box of tissues, aren't I?) Yes, I think you'll need a big box of tissues, but S&G is a great movie, definitely worth seeing.

How true! I was thinking that Ioan makes a wonderful "other man": in Another Life, Ioan's character falls for a married woman... another forbidden love... I had exactly the same thought, frances! But I was also thinking, there's another character who "smashes" another woman's heart, in the way he treats Edie's sister. I know the situation is different, but she is heartbroken, nevertheless......I love how supportive she is in the end, when human nature would have been to gloat.

I'm one of the unfortunate few who has not been able to see ANOTHER LIFE, but in terms of Bossiney in Forsyte Saga for me part of the reason I find it easy to excuse his behavior is comparing Bossiney to Soames. On a surface level, Bossiney is so passionate about his art and Irene while Soames appears so cold and aloof. But, when I really think about it I do wonder if Bossney had lived, would he have moved on to another passion when the fancy struck him. I think he was infatuated with Irene rather than being truly in love. As for Soames, I believe he loved Irene, but didn't know how to express it, especially after being rejected and cuckholded by her. Ah! The tragedies of love, they are so much fun to watch when you are not involved in the situation. GG

Wow. I just finished watching The Forsyte Saga. What a soap opera!! So many twists and turns throughout. Overall, great story. It was tragic though when Phillip (Ioan) died. I was so upset. That was one of the worst scenes I've ever seen. And I think from being such a big fan of Ioan's that it shook me even more. Awful! So many interesting characters in the film. Soames was a horrid man. I don't blame Irene for leaving him. I did recognize Barbara Flynn, Maria's mother in the Hornblower series, in the film. She was great in the movie.
