Interesting read! I like how the author of this blog tries to prove how stories from the past have a connection to the present.
Thanks for sharing, Stevie.

Shad, too, enjoyed the movie. :)
Sorry, Annee, but I'm trying to understand who's being ironic, you or Shad?

Sorry! I made a mess! Do not ask me why, but I quite enjoyed this review from Shad. It's kind of food for thoughts.

It seems this review is based on attatching religious views to a film which never claimed to be 'Christian'. Amazing Grace is a film about a man with Christian convictions; it is not a 'Christian film'. The reviewer apparantly wants us to clean up history, make it more desireable. I'm afraid I see no irony (or enjoyment) in it, but that's just my personal opinion......

I agree with you, Stevie, on the assessment of this review and on AG being a film about a man with Christian convictions, not a 'Christian film'. However, I think that though the film itself is not 'Christian' and they could have played on how universal the values presented are, the Christian side of AG was very much played up in its promotion.

First off, I agree with both of you ladies. Secondly, even if it was a "Christian" movie as the blogger assumes, it dealt issues that would basically appeal to adults or older children and it was rated PG. Both of elements would indicate they were making an attempt to be realistic. Whether the blogger believes it or not, that time period was rather bawdy. While some of the language reflected that bawdiness, I personally think the filmmakers used a lot of restraint as opposed to sensationalizing those elements the blogger found objectionable. With all the research that goes into making a historically based movie, I'd figure that Romola Garai outfit was appropriate for a "Christian" woman of her age and social status. And after listing all the well done elements of the film - script, acting, directing and subject matter - how did they find the time to notice and be bothered by statuary that likely replicates the classical statues in public places.

Thanks, Stevie and Annee. It's good to hear Amazing Grace keeps being liked by those who see it.

Oh! That's great for Ioan that people are still noticing this movie in a positive way. I'm just sorry they didn't notice when it was in the movie theaters, certainly wasn't for a lack of work on Ioan's part promoting it.
Thanks for those, ladies.

I'm wondering how wide a distribution AG had in theatres. This is just a stray thought, but I wonder whether AG had a theatrical distribution limited enough to make it easier for people to get their hands on the dvd than it was to go and see it in a theatre.
Gaffer'sGirl- 05-31-2008
Getting wide distribution(in the U.S.) is a difficult for an independent company like Walden Media to begin with, but when the film isn't associated with a well known book like Narnia or Terabithia or with a well known company like Disney, it becomes even harder. So, unless a film has a big time distributor who is willing to do a little arm twisting behind the scenes, many theaters won't or can't afford to screen a small, independent film without a lot of advertising bucks behind it. Likely they were hoping a smaller, intense opening with full theaters would open up other theaters to screening it. Certainly, AG got enough distribution and adveritising to produce interest and motivate DVD Sales and I think many people are discovering it through friends who have seen it.
