It is an interesting choice of words, I agree, Havoc! Just my opinion, but I think Ioan (and Alice) see a 'hit and miss' career in Hollywood (which AE seems to have spurred him on to) as superior to a successful career in Britain; that's their choice, I suppose. Relationships do change the way we think and are supposed to be about compromise, but who knows how they define 'success'?
Could he have meant as a person rather than career wise or is that what we are discussing?

It is obviously possible that Ioan meant advanced as a person rather than career-wise. Anyway, since success and advancement are very personal concepts, it is hard to agree or disagree with Ioan without knowing how he defines success (and whether he was referring to his career or his private life).
