Sylviane- 11-26-2007

If we are talking about the same interview, it was recently placed in the Very Annie-Mary thread. Matthew said: Matthew: He's not great on sorting out things in the flat. When there are bills to be paid... but it's not through laziness or malice or shifting of responsibility. If I've been away and come home and said, "Why's that phone been cut off?" he'd be like, "Oh damn! Sorry, sorry, sorry..." There's touches of that about him. Innocent oblivion to things that need to be dealt with. He can be efficient but he needs guidance. (Mhmm wouldn't mind getting some 'guidance' from Matthew myself. :naughty ) But I have to say that even if is sometimes he might be 'spacey', 'naive' or whatever else one wants to call it, then by now he too must be aware of it. He is not entirely stupid. So given that, it would be nice if he took responsibility of his own actions, rather than pretend it was done to him by someone else. And I'm glad that he seems to have done that, maybe someone let him read our remarks and it 'triggered' his memory. (Just joking here) We all find ourselves in situations that, when looking back, we should or shouldn't have done or should have done differently, there is no shame in that. If that were the case I'd never be able to crawl from under my rock again. :hide2: .... :happy :happy :happy And then there was that time he could have gotten himself killed by taking a car ride with strangers.... :?: Don't believe I've heard that story.

If that were the case I'd never be able to crawl from under my rock again. :hide2: .... Nor me, Syl, nor me! And then there was that time he could have gotten himself killed by taking a car ride with strangers.... :?: Don't believe I've heard that story. I think that's the time when he'd just moved to LA and got in someone's car, so they could take him to the cashpoint for money? (something to do with quarters? Frances, you'll remember) That incident did sound dangerous, but Ioan also said his friends gave him grief about it - I guess that's how we learn. And I agree with ringtones - Ioan comes across (by nature or design) as naive, but that can only excuse you for so long. I think Syl is right, however, and there seems to be mindshift creeping in . We live in hope.....

I tried to fight it but could not resist:  People magazine "Free Association with Ioan Gruffudd:" ..... Something that should be abolished: Wire hangers. I have this image that I am going to collapse and die in a ball of metal hangers I can't untangle. Headline news: FF actor attacked by killer-wirehanger, disguised in plastic, fortunately he could hold it off him long enough for his collegues to come to his rescue.... Disclaimer: This is a re-enactment. Any resemblance to other hangers, plastic or wire, is entirely coincidental and author of this post wishes to apologise for any inconvenience or grieve that may occur to other innocent hangers all over the world, who are just doing their hard job and making an honest living for themselves and their families.

Great, Sylviane! Thanks for the laugh. Though I think that he may like to embellish stories a bit so that they are more entertaining, I agree with ringtones that he does seem to be naive enough as to put himself in clumsy situations and not to realize that sometimes his words can hurt his fans. Matthew Rhys saying that Ioan forgot to pay bills when they shared a flat in London and the la-*test*-('") version of the story of the fans (who - as I've already said - were total strangers to him) he invited into his flat would confirm his naivety. If that were the case I'd never be able to crawl from under my rock again. :hide2: .... I have a vague recollection of a story according to which Ioan nearly got killed in a car accident at the time when he was filming Titanic in Mexico. I think the story was that Ioan - along with other cast and/or crew members - got drunk on a night out and did not realize their driver was drinking heavily, too, and while driving them back to their lodgings, he lost control of the car.

I remeber that one, Frances. He hurt his neck and was out for a month. But the one I'm thinking of involved change for a laundromat in LA. Someone must remember....or have I finally gone so far round the bend I've run into myself? :thud

zoo.station- 11-26-2007

I remember that one Stevie and it's the one I thought of too. I completely forgot about that car accident. Perhaps it'd be better if ringtones just said which one she meant!

Someone must remember....or have I finally gone so far round the bend I've run into myself? :thud I think it's the one where he was pulled over for running a red light or speeding by a guy pretending to be a cop. The guy said he had to pay an on the spot fine and Ioan got in the guys car to go to an ATM. Personally I think that crosses the line from naivete to plain old stupidity.

zoo.station- 11-26-2007

Yeah and then one he handed the money over he got ditched right? Yeah. When it comes to that story, it seems like even I have more sense than Ioan does!

StevieT- 11-26-2007

Cheers, Mates! So I'm not beyond help afterall!

I either missed or completely forgot this one.

Gaffer'sGirl- 11-26-2007

I remember that one. Jessd version seems pretty close. I remember it was stop signs, because he was talking about California stops - which means you kind of slide through - there was kind of a joke about that. I seems to remember that it was before he moved to L.A. (how early though, I don't know) and his job was finished and he was heading back to London within the next few days. The guy told Ioan he was a FBI agent and took him to an ATM to get money. I think Ioan said he was concerned about being able to leave the U.S. Overly naive, but in his defense - At least he is willing to have a good laugh at his own expense.

SusieD- 11-26-2007

GG, that one he told on the Graham Norton show. Think someone posted that link somewhere. Susie

Sylviane- 11-26-2007

Considering that Ioan can't keep track of his life, I am not surprised that we no longer remember exactly which story he told when under what circumstances  But I agree that the 'stopsign + police story' was told on the Graham Norton show. Well, one version of it. Just wondering if this is the story that Ringtones is referring to?

Frances- 11-26-2007

Personally I think that crosses the line from naivete to plain old stupidity. Something that got to my mind well after my previous post here is that it is better never to underestimate people's naivete. We've had several cases in Italy of con artists showing up at people's homes pretending to have been sent by public utilities, banks, municipalities, charities, or churches and managed to have money being handed over to them in spite of warnings having been repeatedly issued against these things happening. I have a friend whose grandmother has been cheated three times and gave money to fake public utility or social workers in a relatively short time. At least he is willing to have a good laugh at his own expense. Yes, at least he is willing to publicly have a good laugh at his own expense.

StevieT- 11-26-2007

Well, people in glass houses and all that......I certainly enjoyed his rendition of that story (ah. yes, it's all so clear now!) and all the others on the Graham Norton show. Ioan was bright and entertaining and GN is the perfect foil for any storyteller. Compare his methods with Craig Fergusson who could have 'helped' Ioan out a great deal by moving him in a different direction.........
