Here's one from poet Maya Angelou: "I've learned that no matter what happens,or how bad it seems today, life does go on,and it will be better tomorrow."------------------------- And this one from Dolly Parton: "If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain." --------------------------- Mahatma Gandhi: "Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever."

Those are great ones with a lot of truth to them, Ship.

"There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want." --Calvin from The Authoritative Calvin & Hobbes ------------------------------------- "You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing you think you cannot do." --Eleanor Roosevelt

Ah! yes, the wisdom and truth of Calvin.
Really like and try to live by the quote from Eleanor Roosevelt. Don't alway succeed, but I try.

"We have lips, so that we may speak,
We have eyes, so that we may see,
Does it not follow ironically that there must be some purpose for the brain?"

Hello Syl, Thanks for that one. Love it!!!

"I recently bought a book called wisdom of the Netherlands, which has Dutch quotes, translated in English. Here are some cute ones I ran into.
"When you have a race with a bull, try to stay behind him..."
"What a pity we cannot use our future experiences to make our present decisions." K.Schippers
"The day is an apple-tree, but you have to pick the apples yourself." Toon Hermans.
"You don't say more with more words." Bertus Aafjes.

A lot of wisdom and fun in those quotes.

I enjoyed all those quotes, ladies!
Now, this may be a bit off the wall, but I was chewing over the whole 'mistaking Horatio/Lancelot for Ioan' issue, as has been discussed elsewhere, and I was reminded of an old text (it is exactly the same age as me) that I have been very fond of since my days at Uni - The Necessity of Art by Ernst Fischer. I think this quote holds true for all branches of the arts and also describes the relish with which Ioan seems to enjoy his acting.....
"In order to be an artist it is necessary to seize, hold, and transform experience into memory, memory into expression, material into form. Emotion for an artist is not everything; he must also know his trade and enjoy it, understand all the rules, skills, forms, and conventions whereby nature - the shrew - can be tamed and subjected to the contract of art. The passion that consumes the dilettante serves the true artist: the artist is not mauled by the beast, he tames it."
Discuss

That's one deep discussion topic there, General. Leads into the thoughts of does the actor inhabit the character or the character the actor or a combination of both. Some of what we find appealling in Lancelot/ Horatio/ Max and so on is Ioan. But I'm sure a part of the art of portraying those characters has become a vivid memory in his life. Makes me wonder how much he has had to do in real life to try and conform to those image or to escape them. Especially for those kids who truly believe him to be Mr. Fantastic. So much to think about. I have to go for a bike ride and sort it all out. Great topic, by the way.

Syl - I liked those you posted. Most especially the quote about future experiences. If I could only go back to my 15 year old self with the knowledge I have today. Hmm.
Matie - I like Eleanor Roosevelt. I think she was a right smart broad. Was she not the one who said "No one can make you feel inferior"? I live by that one everyday.
Stevie - I'd love to discuss, but that's so deep I couldn't reach it if I had submarine to ride in. I'm so not artistic on any level so that is lost on me. :no no

No worries, Gnat. :hug It's really just saying that an actor remains himself and uses his skill and personal experience to portray someone else. That it is the viewer's fault if we mistake Ioan for Horatio, for example, and expect him to have the same attributes. Also, for Ioan to draw on his own experience to portray Horatio successfully, he doesn't have to have been an officer in His Brittanic Majesty's Navy, just to have flt, love, loss, fear, courage and joy perhaps.
But it was an off the wall train of thought, anyway. It probably should have been in Derailed Thoughts!

Not at all. It was a great quote and quite appropriate, just really deep. For me, I've never been shipwrecked, kidnapped or in outer space but by exploring them and writing about those topics, they have become a part of my reality and as you say the emotional aspect carries over from real life into the fantasy. That is part of the skill and craft of an actor (or writer in my case).
Interesting concept to explore in terms of actors and perception.
