My mom's frequent quote (don't know who first said it): "If you cry over nothing, God will give you something to cry about" Ladybeth, I loved that one! Again, so true! Heard the next one on 'My family' last Friday and laughed so hard I nearly fell of the couch. I wrote it down, so I wouldn't forget, it was only untill I read again the next day, that I realise how true it actually was: "If you keep going on in life with your head in the sand, all people are going to see is an arse (or ass, for the other non UK members)!" (pardon the expression) :lol:

She spoke at a Reader's Theater conference at the Jr. College I attended about thirty years ago. I got "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" autographed. So, incredible to hear her speak her poems. Nothing tops kindness. I've been thinking a lot about what we remember someone for after our mortal life is gone. And your quote lined up with my reflecting. Another one that Maya Angelou said that helps me keep perspective is "When someone shows you who they are, believe them."

Oh I don't know. Most of my favorite quotes are Baudelaire or other rather pessimistic stuff. But I do have a txt file on my desktop called "have been said" containing stuff that has cheered me up, like this: "The fence is always greener on the grass side" my sister, remembering a saying wrong :mrgreen: but it's true. "If one is ugly one can always shower" a girlfriend of mine. Meaning no matter how you look, you will look good if you take other people in to concideration. You must imagine she had to explain her words long and hard, but it's so strange saying that it stuck. I've been showering a lot :razz: Okay I'll search for more intellectual quotes later...

"Sometimes you don't see your plum, but nevertheless it's there." This one's from a cartoon my friend made me watch, it's her favorite. I don't remember it's name but it's japanese. This quote is quite good in the end, but again needs some explanation. The whole story, if I remember right, went like this: "Once there was a rice ball (you know sushi?). He thought he was just an ordinary plain riceball. He could see that every riceball had something special in them, maybe a bit of salmon or seaweed or something else. The little riceball looked at himself and saw nothing. It made him feel really sad and worthless. But the other riceballs saw something in him. He didn't understand why the other riceballs thought he was special. It was because the little riceball did have a plum, but it was in his back. So everyone else could see he had something in him, but he himself couldn't. Sometimes you don't see your plum, but nevertheless it's there.

A favourite saying of my (scottish) granny's was "They're mair to be pitied than scolded!" and I find myself thinking this more and more these days about a certain situation :wink:
