I had another tutorial with my tutor, Samantha, on Friday; and in the last half hour she had me go through an old Quan 101 exam (def harder than BSNS106). I had to tell her what each test I had to do and how to write out the hypothesis or calculate Confidence interval for proportions. she also let me know which questions were the harder ones. IE look at the marks available and how many parts to the question. The more parts eg a-d vs a-f, the less marks per part q. Questions that are worth 12 marks but only have parts a-d; generally one part has more marks assigned to it, so that is the part I need to concentrate on. Which is why I had her show me how to calculate the CI; I jknow how to write it out as we get given printouts from SPSS so reading off that to write out is not hard. a 1000% turn around in mood and confidence to do well.

That is far over my head, Marian. No wonder you have had a tough time. Sounds like a trmendous amount of difficult work.

Marian- 06-06-2009

it was hard, GG, but not so much now I know the 'clue' and shortcuts.

Marian, What exactly is your major and why are you taking statistics and quantitative methods? GinaP

StevieT- 06-07-2009

Marian, I'm glad you're feeling so much better about the whole thing. And here's me feeling pleased with myself for handling what I thought were complicated drug calculations!

Frances- 06-07-2009

I'm glad I did not have to take statistics and quantitative methods when I was at University, as it sounds like they're hard, but it's good to hear they seem to make sense to you, Marian.

finance & quantatitive statistics (quan 101) is the paper taken by people doing a commerce degree, and everyone fails at least once - even finance majors. I was then advised to take a Statistics paper (stats 110) offered for bio sciences, but I failed that twice and then droppe dout the thrid time. Then the School of commerce changed it's name (school of business), introduced a new degree (international business) and reorganised the compulsory papers into a "business core". All the papers that were compulsory at 100 level (there are 6) for all degrees from the school of business were re-written and the major emphasis was put to making things as easy-ish for people to pass the papers, without damaging the value of the degree that each student wanted. this approach also came about because some students wanted to do a double major from the buisness school and were having to do too many papers to satisfy all the requirments for a double major. It is only when a student gets to 200 & 300 level papers required for their major that the work becomes more focused. bsns106 has only half the amount of information and lectures that make up stats 110 and quan 101. My major is tourism, and I need to be able to understand stats and other business stuff - economics (domestic & international); marketing; management; and basic computer use. The tourism degree was a stand alone degree and having it means I can work in any tourism sector; or retail sector for that matter. As a stand alone degree it has disappeared - a major tradeoff amongst the school of business departments, many of which were annoyed that they could not have a stand alone degree for their own department. Thus for the last 2 years any student enrolling at the school of business will receive at graduation a Bachelor of Commerce (..............) degree - the major component of the degree is inserted into the brackets. In the school of business there is, finance (incl stats), marketing, management, economics, tourism & accounting. When I graduate, I will be the last to do so with the Bachelor of Tourism degree. Apologies for the long post.

finance & quantatitive statistics (quan 101) is the paper taken by people doing a commerce degree, and everyone fails at least once - even finance majors. When I was at University (I graduated in Modern Languages and Literature and am an English major), the paper most people who were studying with me was English, which was a paper that some people failed ten times before passing it.

No,no don't apologise. It all sounds quite complicated and mysterious--sort of like a foreign language or sorts. I wish you every bit of good luck with all of it. You'll be able to set up your own tourist business, then,is that the idea?? All of us can come to NZ and visit?! Sounds wonderful.........
