All of that is very true, but he refuses to give up his smoking. And maybe he could prolong his life just a bit longer,if that was stopped----at least that's what was going on in my mind. --------------- My mother's heart specialist, whom she thought the world of, passed away from the same disease at 43 years old,a few years ago. Yes, it's a very hard thing to see people so young lost to such bad illnesses.

Though I think it is a good thing to never start smoking or give up smoking, it is pancreatic cancer that Patrick Swayze has though, not lung cancer, which is what smokers are more likely to get than non-smokers. I don't if his cancer is related to his once being an alcoholic, but I've become quite disenchanted since when my uncle was diagnosed with cancer in spite of his having always lived a healthy life.

Whatever the case,it couldn't hurt to try and quit---and just see if it helped any. I'm still sorry for his situation,no matter what.......

It is hard to know what causes cancer, certainly genetics, something in our environment or something we put in our bodies can have an effect. I would suppose alcohol has more to do with pancreatic cancer, but than my Grandmother had pancreatic cancer when she died and she never drank or smoked. She was nearly ninety so more likely age related.
Personally, if I smoked, I think I'd give it up if I found I have cancer, no matter what kind. I know I've made some changes due to my eyes. Some have become habit and others are hard to stick to. Maybe he has found it too stressful to quit totally, especially if he doesn't drink alcohol.

I've met several people who did not give up smoking even after being diagnosed with cancer. Actually, I heard them saying that they did not quit because the damage was done already and they did not want to add the stress of having to give up smoking to an already stressful situation.

.....because the damage was done already and they did not want to add the stress of having to give up smoking to an already stressful situation.
I have heard some mothers-to-be give the same response to giving up smoking in pregnancy, which I find incomprehensible, but I don't think I would deny the 'pleasure' of smoking to an already terminal patient.
As GG says, many factors influence why some people get cancer and others not. My cousin died at 32 from pancreatic cancer, within 3 days of diagnosis. He never smoked and drank only moderately.
However, smoking is known to lower the immune system and destroy useful cells, so may contribute to every kind of cancer. It's also true that everyone who lives long enough will die from cancer as the body becomes unable to regulate it's cell growth with time. A cheery thought, eh? :???:

Yesterday I heard on the television in a programm about actors and the whole showbizzworld, that Patrick was admitted to hospital with a pneumonia and that he only has two months to live. How sad, it must be terrible.
Frances- 01-13-2009
I read about Patrick Swayze having been hospitalized for pneumonia in a snippet announcing that the new series he's starring in will premiere next Thursday (15 January).
Pneumonia is a serious disease for anyone and it is all the more so for somebody already sick as Patrick Swayze is.
Gaffer'sGirl- 01-13-2009
Quite serious. I hope he recovers quickly.
marthe- 01-14-2009
I also think this is quiet serious. I have heard that people with cancer, suddenly gets a pneumonia and sometimes it is the beginning of the end. When I think how frail live is, I sometimes ask myself the question : why ? But we have to move on and try tho think optimistic.
StevieT- 01-14-2009
Yes, it is common for cancer patients to get pnuemonia, as the treatment lowers the immune system and the lungs are often the first place to suffer. I'm afraid it often is the 'beginning of the end' as it signals the body's inability to fight anymore.
I wish Patrick strength in his coming to terms and much love as he goes.

I've just read the news that Patrick Swayze passed away on Monday.
I'll keep his family and friends in my thoughts and prayers.
Patrick Swayze, Star of 'Dirty Dancing,' Dies at 57

Frances, I have also heard it this morning on the radio.
Patrick has lost his battle against that terrible disease. It is sad. He was a great actor, handsome and also a warm person who was married for 34 years. A great person has left us.
Sylviane- 09-15-2009
So sad. Another piece of my teen-age years gone. :crying Way too soon, way too young :no no
WarriorSelma- 09-15-2009
Such sad news. Condolences to his family and friends. God bless his soul.
