Gaffer'sGirl- 03-26-2009

I read Mr. Midshipman and Lt. Hornblower, so I know you'll enjoy them. Good to see you around and hope all is well.

Thanks GG!! It is good to be back :) I appreciate the warm welcome from all of you :) I love this board!! So far the book is very close to the movie which I think is good and shows that the people who made the movies respected the authors work.

If anybody ever gets the chance, the audiotapes of the books are very good too. They are an abridged version-----but IOAN is reading them to you!

StevieT- 03-27-2009

Yes indeedy! :applaud: I have Hornblower and the Hotspur!

Shipmate- 03-27-2009

I've been looking for the "Hornblower In the West Indies" tape from the same audiobook series for the longest time now,and haven't ever been able to find it yet. Maybe someday............... it sure is soothing to let Mr. H. read his story to you sometimes, you know? :love2: :cloud9: Ahhhhhhhhh............

CherryCokeGrl- 03-27-2009

Awe man... I should have tried to find an audio tape version. I would much rather of had Ioan read it to me, HEHE :)

Shipmate- 03-27-2009

I've had pretty good luck with amazon.com -------might be kind of pricey though.

Gaffer'sGirl- 03-27-2009

I've been looking, too. Were those cassettes or did they come out in CD format? Sadly, our library has someone else narrating and I haven't found them at Barnes and Noble. Although, maybe they could order them. Hmmmmm! or should I say Hmph!. I enjoy the board, too CCG. And the more the merrier.

Shipmate- 03-30-2009

What I have are cassette tapes.

Gaffer'sGirl- 03-30-2009

Maybe they didn't make them as CD's, but one can hope.

Mine's a cassette too. I had to rescue my old Sony Walkman from the rubbish, when I realised none of our players have cassette decks! Phew!

Hey guys!! :bye: Sorry its been a while since I was last on the baord. Our internet was down for a bit. Well, I finally finished reading Mr. Midshipman Hornblower. It was a great read. I really enjoyed getting deeper into the characters which is easier to do when reaading a book. I loved how the movies were really close to the books but at the same time there were several slight changes. Slight spoilers: I liked how the duel scene was played out in the book. I was glad to see both men come out of it. I also liked the different ending to the fire ship chapter. Being picked up by the Spanish after jumping off the fire ship was a different twist. I also thought the duchess and the devil chapter was quite different from the movie version. Both were well done. I think the movie version had to go that way just so that they would have enough to make a whole movie plot out of it. The chapter on the frogs and lobsters was a bit different too. I liked the book version but I prefer the movie version of that one. I like how they added the romantic connection in. In the movie he tries to save the girl and I like how it showed his respect for women. And the chapter where he had to take charge of the rice boat was really great. I did miss the compass part that was in the movie... "Fish for it", LOL :) All in all it was a fantastic book and I hope to in the future read more of the Hornblower series. :) :) C.S. Forester was a spectacular writer!! :applaud:

Great observations, Cherry. It is a fun book to read and compare to what they did with the series.
