Many thanks for that in-depth insight, Syl - I haven't been able to watch as much of B&S as I would have liked. A new series starts here on Sunday (or was it last Sunday? )
I totally agree about not taking the bringing of a child into your life lightly. Who is wishng for the child - Kevin or Scotty? I suppose if it was the latter, or both together, then it might seem natural to him to stay at home. If it's Kevin pushing, then that's a different ball-game. It will be interesting to see how this pans out - it certainly seems to invoke great feeling in their fans! (and I really liked the way Matthew talked about the letter from the mother of a gay son.)

Some fans do. Kevin/Scotty haven't discussed it at all. Kevin is proud of how Scotty is trying to change his life and is, I believe, rather supportive. Kevin likes his own job as well.
I guess, that is why it offends me that fans already assume that Scotty will stay home. Because he's supposed to be the more 'effeminate' one, therefore he's the one who will give up his dream of a chef-cook, that he's worked these last 2 years for? I haven't really seen anyone say: Kevin is 35 years old and has got enough money, why doesnt't he work less days and become a father?
Stepping off my soap-box.

Yes, there is a lot of fan response for a lot of characters. Especially Dave Annable, who played a veteran of the Iraqi war, got a lot of praise for his portrayal of Justin. But also Sally Field, who with her character Nora, proves that a 60 year old widow doesn't necessairely have to become some wilted flower, but can be sexy and fun. From what I read on several gay-sites, Matthew is praised for playing a gay man without the use of all the clichés that are usually shown. He is a lawyer, a son, a brother an a friend who happens to be gay. And that his portrayal of Kevin has made it easier for other men to come out. Because Kevin is so accessible.
Our favourite Brit soap Coronation Sreet has a gay couple commitment situation ongoing at the moment. Marcus is a midwife and Sean (the camp one of the two) is a barman. Sean wants a commitment ceremony, but Marcus is unsure........
Any chance they'll do it, or will the BBC not go on with it?

Besides, I feel the topic of 'let's adopt a child' is being made very easy on tv sometimes. It is not a library book you're hiring, it is a child that comes into your life. Another human being who will change everything, no matter how well-prepared you are. That is something that is often overlooked or romantized.
I agree with you that parenthood is depicted in too an idyllic way and the 'let's adopt a child' or 'let's have a baby' is taken too light-heartedly on tv sometimes.

This is unfair, but it reflects prejudice that even straight couples have to endure. How fair is it to expect it will be the mother who will give up her job or work less when a couple has a baby rather than the father, unless she is the professionally most successful/accomplished partner and higher-earning partner in the couple?

Well, they've gone with every other 'controversy', so I don't see why not. It's ITV, rather than BBC, if that makes any difference, but 'Corrie' has been running for over forty years and I don't think there's anything they haven't covered.
Sean had a recent storyline where he helped a female friend father a child and was then heartbroken when he was cut out of it's life by the girl's boyfriend. I think his desire for commitment is a backlash from this. It's good stuff! I'm a bit of a Corrie addict, especially as it's set in Manchester - a good working class soap!

Maybe the show will cover some of the issues mentioned when the idea of adoption come up. It would be great if they could wait a season or two before making that an issue and allowing the Scotty character a chance to advance more in his career, but that is the nature of TV. You never know if there will be a next season and it does seem like exploring that idea would be the next step in their relationship. Hopefully, B & S will deal with it thoroughly.
My brother spent a few years as Mr. Mom because his wife made more money and didn't enjoy being at home as much as he did. He was very involved in special programs at school and it gave him some time for his artwork. Though just like one of the things many Moms complain about, he felt limited in getting adult interaction.

That was a nice article for Matthew. I watched the season's final episode last night. Don't worry. No spoilers. Just wanted to say the whole episode was nicely written and well done on tying together several threads and bringing up new ones for next year.

I used to live a few miles from Brentwood. It is a very pretty part of the city and it near the ocean, but it is still a city nonetheless and has traffic, parking difficulties, the hordes of people and some problems that other large cities have.
That's great that Matthew ran in one of the races. I would guess the races might have been run on San Vincente Blvd. as there is a large grass divider in the middle of the street that people use for jogging, though it could be they just closed the road.

FerGi, may I ask a question?
You keep on describing LA as a "large problematic town". Ioan, Mattie, Jessica Alba, Helen Mirren, Lisa Rinna, Jennifer Aniston, ... describe it as Heaven (Very rarely an actor moves back from LA). Mah.
Gaffer'sGirl- 05-26-2008
I spent most of my life about 50 miles south of L.A., but I lived in Santa Monica for two years. I suppose whether or not it is "heaven" depends on where you live in L.A. As far as large cities go, it's not bad when you consider the weather and proximity to the ocean and the mountains. I actually enjoyed my time living there, but it is a big city with the problems of a big city. If you have money, it can be less problematic. If you have money, you can afford to take advantage of the restaurants, clubs and entertainment that is available. You can get valet parking for your car instead of hunting for it.
I certainly enjoy driving where I live now better than L.A. because there are no traffic jams in the area I live in and parking is easy. But there are many things we don't have here (like good shopping and entertainment) that L.A. has. Either place is a mixed bag.

That's why I wanna be a celebrity, FerGi! Or Bill Gates Or Rupert Murdoch' or Kashoggi's wife! That's why!
