A song from a singer I like very much, Enya.
Only Time
Who can say
where the road goes
where the day flows
- only time
And who can say
if your love grows
as your heart chose
- only time
Who can say
why your heart sighs
as your love flies
- only time
And who can say
why your heart cries
when your love lies
- only time
Who can say
when the roads meet
that love might be
in your heart
And who can say
when the day sleeps
if the night keeps
all your heart
Night keeps all your heart
Who can say
if your love grows
as your heart chose
- only time
And who can say
where the road goes
where the day flows
- only time
Who knows - only time
Who knows - only time

Love listening to that song, Frances. I can hear it in my head just reading the lyrics.
Sylviane- 04-09-2008
One that will ALWAYS make me cry: It was a hit in 1953, but even now, 55 years later, it doesn't have to take back a single word.
Frankie Laine - I believe
I believe for every drop of rain that falls a flower grows
I believe that somewhere in the darkest night a candle glows
I believe for everyone who goes astray someone will come to show the way
I believe, I believe
I believe above the storm the smallest prayer will still be heard
I believe that someone in the great somewhere hears every word
Every time I hear a newborn baby cry or touch a leaf or see the sky
Then I know why I believe
Every time I hear a newborn baby cry or touch a leaf or see the sky
Then I know why I believe (why I believe)
A beautiful version can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gK48gYtqNTA, no moving images, just a pic of the singer and the song.

Thanks Sylviane, I went and took a listen.

This song always makes me smile and makes everything feel alright in the world even if it is only for a few minutes.
Ain't No Mountain High Enough- Marving Gaye and Tammi Terrell
Listen, baby
Ain't no mountain high
Ain't no valley low
Ain't no river wide enough, baby
If you need me, call me
No matter where you are
No matter how far (don't worry baby)
Just call my name
I'll be there in a hurry
You don't have to worry
'Cause baby,
There ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you babe
Remember the day
I set you free
I told you
You could always count on me darlin'
From that day on I made a vow
I'll be there when you want me
Some way,some how
'Cause baby,
There ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you babe
Oh no darlin'
No wind, no rain
All winters cold
Can't stop me baby (No No Baby)
'Cause you are my goal
If you're ever in trouble
I'll be there on the double
Just send for me oh baby.
My love is alive
Way down in my heart
Although we are miles apart
If you ever need a helping hand
I'll be there on the double
As fast as I can
Ain't No Mountain High Enough Marvin Gaye + Tammi Terrell
Don't you know that
There ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you babe
Don't you know that
There ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
There ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough

It is very catchy, Midnight!

I love that song Midnight! Always reminds me of STEPMOM. Great flick!

I still start to grin from ear to ear if I hear "You don't own me" at the end of "First Wives club" Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton. The movie and that song in particular helped me through a lot of dark days during my depression a few years ago. Even now it still gives me an energy boost. At the time they were 51, 51 and 50 years old. I want to look THAT good 10 years from now, when I'm 50.

You don't own me
You don't own me, I'm not just one of your little toys
You don't own me, Don't say I can't go with other boys
And don't tell me what to do
And don't tell me what to say
And when I go out with you
Don't put me on display
You don't own me, Don't try to change me in anyway
You don't own me, Don't tie me down, cos I'll never stay
I don't tell you what to say
I don't tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you
I'm young, (I'm young) and I love to be young
I'm free, (so free) and I love to be free
To live my life the way that I want
To say and do whatever I please
You Don't Own Me
Blue Eyes- 04-10-2008
This is one of my favorite songs by The Beatles.
The Beatles (Lennon/McCartney)
When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.
And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree,
There will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be. Yeah
There will be an answer, let it be.
And when the night is cloudy,
There is still a light that shines on me,
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be,
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Good choice, Blue eyes. "Let it be" is another song with special meaning to me. Thanks for the reminder.

Today, I'm haunted by an Italian song, "Gli Ostacoli del Cuore" (meaning "The Obstacles of the Heart").
C'è un principio di magia
Fra gli ostacoli del cuore
Che si attacca volentieri
Fra una sera che non muore
E una notte da scartare
Come un pacco di natale
C'è un principio d'ironia
Nel tenere coccolati
I pensieri più segreti
E trovarli già svelati
E a parlare ero io
Sono io che li ho prestati
Quante cose che non sai di me
Quante cose che non puoi sapere
Quante cose da portare nel viaggio insieme
C'è un principio di allegria
Fra gli ostacoli del cuore
Che mi voglio meritare
Anche mentre guardo il mare
Mentre lascio naufragare
Un ridicolo pensiero
Quante cose che non sai di me
Quante cose che non puoi sapere
Quante cose da portare nel viaggio insieme
Quante cose che non sai di me
Quante cose devi meritare
Quante cose da buttare nel viaggio insieme
C'è un principio di energia
Che mi spinge a dondolare
Fra il mio dire ed il mio fare
E sentire fa rumore
Fa rumore camminare
Fra gli ostacoli del cuore
Quante cose che non sai di me
Quante cose che non puoi sapere
Quante cose da portare nel viaggio insieme
Quante cose che non sai di me
Quante cose che non vuoi sapere
Quante cose da buttare nel viaggio insieme.

There's some magic
among the obstacles of the heart
which begins easily
between an evening which does not die
and a night to unwrap
like a Christmas present
There's some irony
in tenderly cuddling
my most secret thoughts
and to find them already revealed
And it was I who spoke
It was I who loaned them.
How many things you don't know about me
How many things you can't know
How many things to take on a journey together
There's some joy
among the obstacles of the heart
which I want to deserve
even while I watch the sea
while I let
a ridiculous thought wreck
How many things you don't know about me
How many things you can't know
How many things to take on a journey together
How many things you don't know about me
How many things you must earn
How many things to throw away on a voyage together!
There's some energy
That pushes me to rock
between my saying and my doing
And to hear it make noise
Make noise walking
among the obstacles of the heart
How many things you don't know about me
How many things you can't know
How many things to take on a journey together
How many things you don't know about me
How many things you don't want to know
How many things to throw away on a journey together

That's a very beautiful song, Frances - I'd like to hear it sung!
I am re-visiting Billy Bragg's Dylanesque protest songs of the 'eighties. This one was written by Leon Rosselson - more of whom later - and it always stirred my protester's heart at the time. It's based on real events.
The World Turned Upside Down
"In 1649 to Saint George's Hill
A ragged band they called 'The Diggers'
Came to show the people's will.
They defied the landlords
They defied the laws,
They were the dispossessed reclaiming what was theirs.
'We come in peace' they said 'to dig and sow.
We come to work the land in common
And to make the wastelands grow.
This earth divided,
We will make whole
So it will be a common treasury for all.
The sin of property we do disdain.
No man has any right to buy and sell
The earth for private gain.
By theft and murder,
They took the land.
Now everywhere the walls spring up at their command.
They make the laws to chain us well.
The clergy dazzle us with Heaven,
Or they damn us into Hell.
We will not worship
The God they serve,
The God of Greed who feeds the rich while poor men starve.
We work, we eat together, we need no swords.
We will not bow to the masters
Or pay rent to the lords.
We are free men,
Though we are poor.
You Diggers all stand up for freedom, stand up now!.'
From the men of property the orders came.
They sent their hired men and troopers
To wipe out the Digger's claim.
Tear down their cottages,
Destroy their corn.
They were dispersed but still the vision lingers on.
You poor take courage, you rich take care.
This earth was made a common treasury
For everyone to share.
All things in common,
All people one.
'We come in peace.' The orders came to cut them down.

Both of those are great songs I've never heard of before this.
The Italian song seems a true description of loving another person. We can never quite get all we want.
Stevie - what was the incident that spurred that song?

Stevie - what was the incident that spurred that song?
Just as the song describes, GG. A group of embrionic socialists in England in the 17th Century protested against the widespread land clearances, when the ruling landowners created arbitrary boundaries to suit themselves. This was during the Englich Civil War - a fascinating period in our history (1642-1651) when royalty was overthrown and for a few years we were a commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell (who founded the Coldstream Guards, incidentally  )
The Diggers' commune was destroyed by the the landed gentry, who feared a spread of this kind of peaceful protest (and anarchy!)
