Maybe he could be an "honorary" godparent? Is that possible?
Well, I guess that even if Matthew won't officially be chosen as Ioan and AE's baby godfather, he can be considered an "honorary" godfather, considered that he is an old and good friend of Ioan's. Actually, it is a pity that kids can only have two godparents: it would be nice if they could have more, so that they are officially told that there are many people they count on, if they need help.

Growing up in an atheist family, the concept of Godparents is an unfamiliar one to me - I have never had any, nor have my children. But I did and do feel secure in the knowledge that there are friends and family who love us and them enough to care for them, should I die. I am sure Matthew would lend a hand, whatever the circumstances. From love, not from duty.

I thought traditionally a boy had two godfathers and one godmother, whereas a girl had one godfather and two godmothers. But these days I don't think there's a limit. My nephew has three godmothers and two godfathers (none of them relatives)
Whatever, this baby is going to be extremely spoilt by family and friends.

Godparents were just not a tradition in my family. I think that's kind of what it comes down to: tradition and culture. Many people tend to look for a married couple as Godparents, hoping that they will watch over that child for life; or at least into adulthood. That was more effective years ago when people tended to stay in the same city or neighborhood for life. Now, with the changes in society and the way people move around, it is becoming more of an honorary position in many cases. Because of this, some people break with tradition and name more than one couple or person as Godparents.
I suppose with parents in their thirties rather than their twenties, you'd have a better idea of which friends will stick it out and be there for your child, if their services are needed.
I also had to think of Silvia and Cris who took their godparenting duties very seriously. They are certainly a wonderful example. :applaud:

In Italy, tradition has it that every child has a godfather and a godmother, usually picked among relatives. A couple's siblings are often the ones chosen as godparents (as they are as best men or maids of honour at weddings) to avoid friends to interpret the choice as if you are preferring a friend over another.

In Belgium, the godfather and the godmother are the grandparents for the first two children. And for the third baby they take the brother of the father or the sister of the mother and so on. It is always somebody from the family. But that is tradition.
I think there are already young couples who take their friends.
And in Belgium a godfather and a godmother are not people who have to watch over the child. They are there for the baptism of the baby and then with the New Year, with the birthday of the baby, with St. Nicholas or other occasions, they give presents or money to the baby and when the baby is grown-up, he also gives a present to his godfather and godmother.

Ioan and Alice were at this event together. They seemed happy (I added pictures in the pictures threads):
the 16th Annual Race to Erase MS event themed "Rock To Erase MS" co-chaired by Nancy Davis and Tommy Hilfiger at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza on May 8, 2009 in Century City, California.

 From the horse's mouth! Ioan and Alice are expecting in September.......
During his wife's pregnancy the actor says his role has changed many times. "You go from being lover to husband, lackey, taxi driver. You just have to have so many caps on. Listen, it's a blessing that I am here, at home not working, being able to be there for her."
Still, "it's been tough. I'm sure we have no idea what we are heading into. But we both love each other so much and really hope that we will create an environment of love and happiness."
Gruffudd and Evans, 37, know the sex of the baby and have told family and friends but are keeping that detail secret from the public.

So, the month is confirmed, but not the sex. So, the game is still on over in THe Baby Shower thread. Could be either sex, despite what the French magazine said.
Ioan sounds very happy and excited. And like most prospective parents, probably a little nervous. It's good for him that he's been able to stick around the house this summer.

Just another confirmation, but I really like the (non-preggers?) picture.
