Funny mention of Ioan and GéGé for 102D 102 Dalmatians Who's the designer? Jean-Pierre Le Pelt (Gérard Depardieu), the fur-loving designer who is frequently covered with red paint by pro-*test*-('")ers. Whether that's outrage at his use of fur or horror at his Fred Flintstone-meets-Billy Ray Cyrus personal appearance is not clear. Hmm, sounds familiar, reminds me of ... John Galliano on a bad day, with a dash of Jean Paul Gaultier. What are the designs like? Either gigantic fur coats not seen since the passing of the Notorious BIG, or ballgowns apparently made with the EuroDisney market in mind. Best prima donna quote? "Cruella De Vil! My inspiration, my idol, my show!" What, in this movie, does being a fashion designer represent? Psychotic savagery and a threat to all that is decent, loving, good and furry. Credibility as a designer? Not very high, though Depardieu's designer is slightly better than Ioan Gruffudd's strange homage to Lennie from Of Mice and Men. http://www.scenta.co.uk/film/news/1714755/which-couturiers-make-the-cut-on-screen.htm

Good description of Gérard Depardieu's (BTW, is there someone outside France who knows him as Gégé, apart Francophiles or French people living abroad?) and Ioan's look in 102D. I've always thought that characters were deliberately caricatural in that film. :hmm:

StevieT- 01-31-2008

I agree, Frances. I think they are deliberately two dimensional in homage to the original cartoon. I think that's why Gerard appeared 'Flintstonesque. Ioan went all out for 'cute and naive' and totally succeeded  It's a children's movie and don't think there are meant o be any deeper layers to uncover.

Gaffer'sGirl- 01-31-2008

I think you are both right about the take on the characters. I didn't know that Depardieu was refered to as GeGe(sorry don't know how to make accents).

Frances- 02-01-2008

I didn't know that Depardieu was refered to as GeGe(sorry don't know how to make accents). In France, Depardieu is often referred to as Gégé. The French must like abbreviations... Do you know philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy? He is often referred to as BHL.

Thanks for the find Annee

Interesting bit of cultural information, Frances. I studied French in school and the teachers never mentioned that. I've studied a wee bit of Levy, only enough to be familiar with him, but didn't know he was known as BHL.

Ioan, Mattie and rugby. From the 2nd half of the article Mattie speaks. Burton’s modern counterparts enjoy a similar passion for the game. Tracking Wales’ 2005 Grand Slam campaign from a Santa Monica pub overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Ioan Gruffudd felt compelled to leave the Hollywood hills for the green, green grass of home. “I just had to get back,” recalls the 34-year-old. “It was awesome. When we beat Scotland I just knew we were going to win the Grand Slam. That’s a very rare feeling but there was no doubt we were going to do it. So I booked my ticket and flew home.” When victory came in the Millennium Stadium that day, Ioan found himself overwhelmed with emotion. “It was a surreal experience. I don’t remember looking into anyone else’s eyes. It just felt such a personal moment. It sounds strange but I didn’t want to share it with anyone! I just wanted to savour my own feelings.” Ioan’s former school-friend, flat-mate and fellow actor Matthew Rhys has also followed Wales from film sets, stages and studios across the world. http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/news/feature-news/2008/02/02/glory-days-91466-20421780/

Cool article Annee, Thanks!!!!!

Sylviane- 02-02-2008

Thanks, Annee, I´ve posted this is also on the Brothers & Sisters site, with credit to you, as it is more about Matthew than Ioan... (and it should be. ) (Sorry to be gloating, but after all these interviews where Ioan was the ´more important´ star, it´s nice to see Matthew in the picture for once. )

Very fun article with both Ioan and Matthew. I've been past that Ye Olde King's Head Pub a number of times when I lived in Santa Monica and a few times since, but have never gone in. I believe that's where my sister and her husband played darts back in the late 70's when they both lived in West L.A. Last time I was near there was two years ago. Guess I'll have to convince one of my friends to check it out next time I'm down in L.A. Never know who you might see. Also might be a long time before I'm able to go back down. Drat! Wish I'd have known back in October  . Thanks for the article, Annee.

(Sorry to be gloating, but after all these interviews where Ioan was the ´more important´ star, it´s nice to see Matthew in the picture for once. ) What do you mean 'for once'? He gets his own time, just as Ioan does.

StevieT- 02-03-2008

It's only right that Ioan is more important here and I'm sure that there are many (probably more, at present!) articles on Mattie's sites that mention our Welshboy only in passing...... I'm glad they've both still got Wales in their hearts. I never doubted it -"you can take the boy out of Wales, but you can't take Wales out of the boy!" My Dad hasn't lived in Wales for seventy years, but still tears up at the Rugby anthems and goes to live games when he can (not so often these days!)
