I've never seen those pics before (how could I miss them? Ioan looks good in them). So thanks for sharing, GG.

StevieT- 12-31-2008

Familiar event, but not those exact pics, GG - my lovely, sexy Welshboy was at it again, wasn't he? (being droolworthy, I mean  )

Shipmate- 12-31-2008

Well. now we know...... "I didn't get cast in anything in Los Angeles for seven years. I just kept going. You have to learn to show off about yourself to get noticed." Welsh actor IOAN GRUFFUDD struggled to shine on the competitive Hollywood audition scene. Ioan spills the beans..... http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/article/the%20things%20they%20say%2011037_1093815

I"m guessing that seven years was early on when he used to come to L.A. from Britain. Maybe that was part of what pushed him to make the move to Hollywood. So, many castings are based on knowing the right people. You can't get to know people well when you are a visitor. You got to live with them. I would guess being friends with Nick Moran helped him get cast in The Kid.

It most definitely couldn't have hurt!

Seems it's possible Ioan (and/or Alice)could make a brief appearance in a documentary on LA by Piers Morgan, which will air on Thursday at 9pm on ITV1. Piers appears to have interviewed Ioan and Alice for the show, going by this article... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1138628/PIERS-MORGAN-Los-Angeles-nasty-selfish-blood-sucking-ruthless-seedy-heartless-town---I-LOVE-IT.html However, as the following reply seems familiar to me, I'm not sure if he's just using old material for his article..... Hornblower star Ioan Gruffudd's actress wife Alice Evans told me: 'The British have a tendency to say, "Oh, I did this little film but it wasn't very good." And that's fatal because the Americans take that at face value. 'Brits are taught not to brag about being successful but over here it's part of the culture.' But both of them believe that this is the place to be if you want to improve yourself. 'There's an abundance of talent here,' said Ioan, 'and you get to work with all the best people.' 'Any downsides?' 'Ooh, the toilet paper,' said Alice. 'It's so thin, it's terrible! I'd swap a major movie role for a big stock of Andrex.'

Let us know if you get to see it, Stevie. I'd love to know what else is said. And by the way, just in case any of you IZers think we are bereft of good TP, there are brands of soft, thick, fragranced, (not colored so much anymore), even wet TP to be easily found in the U.S. Supermarket. :???: Basically, there isn't much you can't find somewhere. However if they shop at Trader Joe's like it appears from that article a week or so ago, it's not as likely to be found. Trader's tends to specialize in environmently safe products, so we are talking paper thin cardboard. OK, I suppose that's enough said. It is kind of funny the products we miss from home when we are in a foriegn country.

Shipmate- 02-09-2009

Hope you get to see the program too,Stevie. All of the above (save the TP comment)sound pretty familiar.

Frances- 02-09-2009

UK YoZoners, let us know what else is said, please, if you have the chance to watch the programme. And by the way, just in case any of you IZers think we are bereft of good TP, there are brands of soft, thick, fragranced, (not colored so much anymore), even wet TP to be easily found in the U.S. Supermarket. :???: Basically, there isn't much you can't find somewhere. OK, I suppose that's enough said. It's incredible that there are variations on something as simple as TP.

Gaffer'sGirl- 02-09-2009

Yeah, it is. Then again it can get pretty pricey for the good stuff. . . but it is soft.

Yep they got airtime
They were filmed with Piers in the Four Seasons. Ioan said that he spent 7 years in LA without getting a role. Not sure what to make of that.. Seems he's struggling as well as AE. She was quite vocal even though it was only a short piece. She said that when you come to LA you have to start from scratch as noone believes you can act (well maybe that just her  ) so you have to exaggerate a lot. She also pointed out that there are 500,000 actors in LA. She said that it's hard to see a giant billboard there of a movie you auditioned for and didn't get. Then Ioan was going on about working with the best people etc and that was about the gist of it. Considering the work he's done in LA (he was introduced as Mr Fantastic) I'm not sure I buy the line about him working with the best people. I can't be the only one who thinks they moved there for the lifestyle and the money rather than the quality of the work. Also Ioan seems a bit nervous. He had one arm hanging on to the arm of Alice's chair it seemed.

Gaffer'sGirl- 02-12-2009

Thanks for telling us about the show, Bridge. How many other people did Piers interview? Did the other people interviewed seem to like L.A. as much as Ioan/Alice and Piers? I'm pretty sure Ioan's reference to seven years was at the beginning of his career when he used to take trips over to L.A. with Matthew or others for pilot season. I have an old interview where he talks about planning a move to L.A. because of the lack of opportunity to meet people who can help your career when you just visit, While they've said the L.A. lifestyle appeals to them, it's not like you see them constantly on the party circuit and out for that kind of publicity. But, socializing with other people involved in movies can help your career. And if you don't get work, eventually you won't be living that lifestyle. Overall, if you want to be successful in the movies - L.A. has the most opportunities and funding, etc. It is a game of numbers and there is just more product that will be seen Worldwide or pays well to audition for in L.A. Yes, there is more competition, but he obviously still has contacts in Britain and is known there. By being in L.A., he widens his possibilities. When you think about it, those who are long term fans of Ioan's are well aware of his British projects, but in America very few know of S&G, Great Exoectations, Warriors, Happy Now because they had limited release outside of Britain. They know Hornblower and then there is a big gap until King Arthur (sort of) FF and AG which have been seen world-wide like Hornblower or Titanic. As a performer or writer or director a worldwide success opens more doors everywhere.
