More about The Ceremony. :) ********* Ioan Gruffudd received the Tlws Sian Phillips award, for the Welshman or woman who has made a significant contribution in either a major feature film or television programme. Gruffudd’s face looked heavily made up, almost camouflaging a left black eye – acquired when his wife Alice Evans accidentally hit him with a golf club, the Western Mail understands. He clearly did not hold it against her. After delivering a thank you speech in Welsh, he specifically thanked Alice, who he said was watching in Los Angeles, saying “love you baby angel”. Llwydcoed-born Gruffudd, who starred as slavery abolitionist William Wilberforce in the film Amazing Grace, was generous with his time on the red carpet, stopping to meet and sign autographs for fans in the crowd of more than 150 people, who watched the stars arrive. ********* http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/news/wales-news/2008/04/28/dr-who-dominates-the-welsh-baftas-with-haul-of-six-awards-at-star-studded-event-91466-20828841/

Thanks for the article with further details about the ceremony, Annee. I'm glad Ioan made it to Cardiff to receive his award. Hope his eye heals quickly.

I'm glad that Ioan made it for the ceremony. Nice to hear that he spent a great deal of time with fans on the red carpet.

Good stuff, Welshboy! :hug (but I thought he said on Craig Fergusson that 'Baby Angel' was AE's name for him?) :???:

Quite nice article about BAFTA Cymru. :) ********* IOAN’S A REAL SUPERHERO! May 4 2008 by Our Correspondent, Wales On Sunday IOAN GRUFFUDD, Welsh Hollywood star of Fantastic Four, was a hero to us, the Welsh, at the Bafta Wales ceremony in Cardiff last Sunday night. Having thanked the director Mike Leigh for presenting him with the Tlws Siân Phillips Award he then delivered his thank you speech entirely in Welsh. Not a word of English. I asked him afterwards why. Because, he said, he felt that was the right thing to do at the Welsh Baftas. What he might not have realised is how he single-handedly redressed the balance at this Welsh ceremony, where the Welsh are increasingly and frustratingly marginalised. ********* http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/news/columnists/2008/05/04/ioan-s-a-real-superhero-91466-20859390/

Tutti Mi Vogliono Tutti Mi Cercano Nice mention of Ioan, who was very desired at BAFTAS. ********** There was time, however, for a proper red carpet march of celebs in a major and minor key. After years of being trampled underfoot by Lucy Cohen’s paparazzi, I plotted a careful path, squeezing in between Max Boyce and Ioan Gruffudd. In bringing up the rear behind the lovely Ioan, I managed to get in shot as the news cameras rolled. Catching the moment on Wales Today, Social Secretary Dot managed to Sky-plus it for posterity. Dot reckoned I could have been mistaken for Ioan’s missus, or as he so memorably referred to wife Alice in his Bafta acceptance speech, “baby angel”. I don’t think so. For one, Alice wouldn’t have been wearing a dress from Coast. And two, she wouldn’t have been manically grinning over her husband’s shoulder in the irritating manner of those little tykes who attempt to ruin the touchline interviews on Scrum V. I did manage to have a nice chat with Ioan later on, mind. He revealed he’d kept up with Wales’ Grand Slam campaign by watching the Ireland game in New York – with Sean Connery. And, of course, they Bond-ed even more when Scotland beat England straight afterwards. Ioan was also mightily impressed with the way Warren Gatland has galvanised Welsh talent. “It’s like actors – they know when they’re working with a great director,” he said. ********* http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/news/columnists/2008/05/05/bafta-shock-most-of-the-audience-were-conscious-91466-20863853/

Ah! Lancelot meeting up with King Arthur to watch the battles over which Rugby team would rule Britain. A nice touch. I'm pleased that Lancelot's team was victorious in the end, but nice to hear Scotland did well also. Thanks for the addition to the stories from the Welsh BAFTA's.

Frances- 05-05-2008

I would have liked to be in that venue in New York where Ioan watched a Rugby match with Sean Connery. Nice to read some extra stories from the Welsh Baftas.
