I guess it is not easy. Which is sad but I understand Ioan and his "friends".
Gaffer'sGirl- 05-11-2009
It's great to see how much Ioan (and Matthew & others) still care about their hometown. Can't say as I have too many thoughts or concerns about my birthplace in Texas (of course I only lived there for two weeks  ).
Nicolette- 05-12-2009
You mean you were born in Texas and left Texas after two weeks only and never came back ?
StevieT- 05-12-2009
I do understand about a love for a home town. I am a Londoner, but haven't lived there since I was ten. (apart from two years at college), but I have friends there and visit when I can. I love the great dirty beast that she is!

I can understand, too, that you can still love the place you grew up in, though you may have been living elsewhere for years

Two weeks as a baby are too little time to grow fond of a place and consider it your home town: GG, I guess your home town is the place you grew up in rather than the place where you were born.

Ha, London is easy to love. It one of the cities I like best in the world.

Oh,Stevie, what's the Welsh song I'm trying to think of (being at the library doesn't put me near my cd music collection), where they say there's always a 'welcome home' to Wales-----no matter how long you've been away??? Ioan, and the others, will always be Welshmen, and that's nice to see loyalties to one's homeland and concerns for the developments of the town where you grew up. This sounds like one of those "TO BE CONTINUED..." things, doesn't it? We may hear much more before it's all settled.

'We'll keep a Welcome " , Matie. Beautiful, sung by a male voice choir. ('hiraeth' is homesickness or longing)
Far away a voice is calling
Bells of memory chime
Come home again,come home again
They call through the oceans of time
We'll keep a welcome in the hillside
We'll keep a welcome in the Vales
This land you knew will still be singing
When you come home again to Wales
This land of song will keep a welcome
And with a love that never fails
We'll kiss away each hour of hiraeth
When you come home again to Wales
We'll keep a welcome in the hillside
We'll keep a welcome in the Vales
This land you knew will still be singing
When you come home again to Wales
This land of song will keep a welcome
And with a love that never fails
We'll kiss away each hour of hiraeth
When you come home again to Wales
We'll kiss away each hour of hiraeth
When you come home again to Wales

Ahhhhh, that's it. And,thank you so much for posting the lyrics. I'm humming the tune in my head right now. :whistle
Gaffer'sGirl- 05-12-2009
That's a beautiful song, Stevie. I'm sure it would make any Welshman homesick just to read the lyrics.
Myself, I'm more of a wanderer. Home is wherever my family is, basically. Until my birth, several generations of our family had been born in Indiana (Hoosiers through and through). My poor Mom had to move within two weeks of giving birth at least three times. She deserves a medal. We did have a party for her on Mother's Day.
Shipmate- 05-12-2009
And rightfully so! She's a trooper!
Frances- 05-12-2009
Beautiful song, Stevie. I'd love to hear it sung.
GG, I'm sure your mother was very pleased that you did a party for her on Mother's Day. I guess she appreciated that party more than she would a medal.

Further to Ioan and others support of the campaign, Matthew Rhys has landed in Cardiff for the BAFTA Cymru,

Here is a copy of the letter than Ioan and the others wrote to my favourite paper the Guardian on May 6th....
We believe that the four Grade 1 and Grade 2* listed historic parks that form the unique central core of green space in central Cardiff are under threat. We agree with the Welsh assembly government that: "The whole complex is an asset to the city of incomparable historic, visual and amenity value." Development has eroded and commercialised the three parks to the west of the river Taff. Now Cardiff council proposes to drive a new bridge and 6m wide roads through the Grade 1 listed Bute Park to facilitate commercial events.
We believe that no more development should take place until there has been a proper independent professional evaluation of the four parks and their future long-term, sustainable use. Consequently we call on Cardiff council to agree an immediate moratorium on development in Bute Park, Sophia Gardens, Llandaff Fields and Pontcanna Fields until a wide-ranging public consultation has been held into their use and a future strategy agreed.
