I went to see Leathernecks last night which was fun to watch though it did have some areas where it faltered. Throughout the movie, I thought Ioan would just be so good at the sophisticated, quick banter or at least I think he would be. So, I would love to see him in that type of sophisticated Romantic Comedy. Now I'm hoping that maybe this pilot Meant to Be's will have that type of banter. Since Glen Gordon Caron has a history with that type of dialouge - Moonlighting and Remington Steele, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Yes, wouldn't that be delicious? I just love smart, sharp writing like that-----and, Ioan would be good at it, and sexy......at it,too! Yum........

Gaffer'sGirl- 04-07-2008

With his British accent. Double Yumm!

This blog caught my attention. :) Ioan as Spike in Cowboy BeBop? Personally, I am not an anime fan; still I liked the Spike-Julia love story. Sad and sweet at the same time. http://animecastingcall.blogspot.com/2008/08/casting-cowboy-bebop.html

The blogger thinks he's too old, annee. Personally, I don't know the story, so can't comment...........

Gaffer'sGirl- 08-25-2008

I kind of thought that was funny since he and Jamie Bamber are very close in age and look it, I think. Ioan has very strong features that make him look mature, not baby faced, but not necessarily older. Last night, I was thinking he could play Wuthering Heights Heathcliffe. Haven't checked, but someone else may have said this earlier. Heathcliffe is described with dark hair and eyes, looking almost gypsy like. Ioan is naturally a little pale for that, but in the Mutiny series of Hornblower, he could look like it. It would be an acting challenge. Not sure I'd want to see him playing some of the evil aspects of Heathcliffe though.

Shipmate- 08-25-2008

Oh YES,you would,GG---and you'd LOVE it,too---I know you would! ---------------------------- Something very dastardly for a change might be rather nice. Like a re-make of the "Boston Strangler". Remember that one, with Tony Curtis? (Actually, I'm thinking of a comedy re-make of "Some Like It Hot!" myself. WHO would play the Monroe role tho'??)

I think Ioan could do a bit of not-quite-whiter than white very well, don't you? On holiday i very much enjoyed a novel by Andrew Pepper called 'The Revenge of Captain Paine'. It's a mystery starring an ex Bow Street Runner who delves into the squalor and evil of Victorian London to battle old demons and new enemies. Here is a link to a review that might whet your appetite. http://www.orionbooks.co.uk/HB-37915/The-Revenge-Of-Captain-Paine.htm And I'm looking forward to reading the previous novel, 'The Last Days of Newgate' where Pyke is still a Bow Street Runner. Ioan is slighter than the individual in the books, but I think he'd make a wonderfully dark, brave, brooding Pyke..... Oh, and see from the Orion site that a new Pyke mystery 'Kill-Devil and Water' was released on 14th August - plenty of material for you there, Welshboy!

Stevie, I read the review and that does sound like a great series. Ship - I like dark and brooding rather than really evil. Like a Lancelot where you know underneath there is a hurt and complex soul that makes the character act in a sometimes vicious manner, rather than a crazy or evil person. I suppose Heathcliff can fit that description, but I care more for movie Heathcliff than the book Heathcliff who is usually more bent. I went to see Tropic Thunder the other day and it reminds be of the discussion between Ben Stiller's and Robert Downey's characters talking about playing a mentally handicapped character. *****POSSIBLE SPOILER****** They say if an actor plays a totally mentally handicapped person like Sean Penn in I AM SAM - no Awards. Whereas a character like Dustin Hoffman's RAIN MAN is not fully handicapped and got an Academy Award. I actually see the point as I've thought the same thing. Extrapolate and take that to evil characters. I think a complex, brooding character with some aspects of good and evil is far more interesting to watch than just an evil character (besides the creepy factor). There is also a whole lot more to discuss with a more complex character.

StevieT- 08-26-2008

Very interesting observations, GG! The actor's craft is truly a complex (and fascinating) one.

Gaffer'sGirl- 08-26-2008

Yeah, and hopefully always entertaining.

Shipmate- 08-27-2008

Maybe you've got something there,GG. But,I'd still like to see Ioan do something dark, classic, and a little twisted---just to see how it would turn out. Hey,how about Dr. Jeckyl & Mr. Hyde,or maybe a not entirely musical version of The Phantom of the Opera? ------------------------------------ Stevie, that book review sounds good to me--may have to 'investigate' it myself. Thanks for the tip!

I've got to "resurrect" this thread for a while. I haven't posted in ages (in the meanwhile I did, for example, finally finish my MA on the topic of Horatio Hornblower, hehe), but I have a few candidates for perfect roles for Ioan. This past summer I devoured through Juliet Marillier's Sevenwaters trilogy. In the first book (Daughter of the Forest) the old children's story about the seven swan brothers is retold. The story is set in pre-Christian, Celtic Ireland. (And this already makes me squee of delight!) Now, what makes this book wonderful is that there are seven (!!) wonderful roles to cast. The dark and handsome brothers. The author herself has said she'd like to see Ioan cast as one of the brothers - and there'd still be room for more eye candy after he was cast. Hee. Personally, I'd like to see Ioan play Finbar, a really different character - deeply wounded, but infinitely wise brother. (I'm not saying more so I don't spoil it for anyone.) The author had originally thought Finbar would be perfect for Ioan, but a month or so ago she said she had changed her mind. But I still vote for Finbar! So there's one. And another role I'd love to see Ioan do would be Neil Gaiman's Sandman. (I think this has been discussed somewhere some time, but not in this thread in any case.) Dark, brooding, handsome, Master of Dreams. (He could come visit my dreams any night, hehe.) What got me convinced was this photo shoot: He's perfect! So there, that's my five cents (and more) on this topic. I hope to be posting more from now on - I've missed squeeing about Ioan with likeminded people.

Thanks Yavannie - Nice to hear from you again. I've also heard that Ioan would be perfect for Sandman. I haven't read the book, but it does make me more curious. I've never heard of the Seven Swans. It sounds promising with Ioan's Celtic roots.

Yavannie- 09-14-2008

Nice to be back, Gaffer. :) Sandman is an awesome series of graphic novels. You should definitely give them a go. Although I know not everyone likes graphic novels. I thought I wouldn't either, but then I completely fell in love with Sandman. And the story about the Seven swan brothers is (in short) that the brothers are under a spell by an evil witch. The spell changed them into swans (they only become humans once a year or for an hour a day, depending on the version) and their one sister has to knit a shirt for each to release them from the spell. Sounds easy, but depending on which version of the story you come across, the material has to be something pretty impossible, nettles, little star flowers or such. And while the sister makes the shirts she cannot utter a sound. Not a laugh, a word, not a cry of pain or else everything will be in vain and the brothers remain swans. It's a great story and Juliet Marillier makes it into a great novel. And yes, since all the brothers are described as dark haired and green eyed, I'd say Ioan would fit in nicely. I've a few other names I'd like to see alongside him, too. It's loads of fun trying to come up with actors for the roles. Occupies the wandering thoughts pretty well. Heh.
