I'm guessing you have all heard about the situation with Russia and Georgia? And now, some of the athletes from Georgia's Olympic team are heading back home to be a part of the military and wage war against Russia.
What I heard is that Georgian athletes were planning to head back home to pro-*test*-('") against what they considered an attack against their country by the Russians and then the Georgian president, Mikheïl Saakachvili, asked them to stay on and so it looks like they're not leaving Bejing. Anyway, sad situation.
Very sad indeed, Frances. It reminds me of the Moscow Olympics in '80,'84(?) :no no

Interesting how jumbled up news can get, because that's honestly not what I heard. Your story does seem more realistic though.
I so agree,Marthe. I saw a picture of the two ladies together,it was very touching to me. Maybe somebody should just put the LEADERS of these countries together,in an olympics boxing ring, and let them fight it out ---to the death!

Anyway, if someone's interested in how this story is developing, French President Nicolas Sarkozy (he flew to Moscow and Tbilisi to meet the presidents of Russia and Georgia) said Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, had agreed to a six-point peace plan to settle the conflict over South Ossetia. The text is to be presented to a meeting of European Union foreign ministers so they can throw their weight behind it and make it the basis for a U.N. Security Council resolution.
All sounds so complicated and scary for those poor average citizens, doesn't it? Nobody wins.
Ah, I have no idea which economic or political interests are there behind this situation, but average citizens have surely nothing to gain from this.
