favourite scenes?
There's so many priceless moments in VAM, not least of all because it's so funny to see Ioan's comic streak for a change. Apart from the famous "Annie, Get Your Gun" scene which practically had me rolling on the floor the first time I saw it- and the fourth... and the tenth- I also love the scene where AM goes to visit Bethyn and she's pretending to snog the poster on her wall when Bethyn's dad walks in. It's such an adolescent thing to do and I thought it was quite funny. In fact, the whole movie is a little-known gem, but what do you guys think?

Sylviane- 11-22-2007

Good question. Favorite Ioan-moment must be the song. He is so completely over-the-top there, but oh-so funny. Most beautiful moment must be the moment that Annie-Mary get on top of her dad's truck and starts to sing and you seen Bethan's face light up. Being more interested in Matthew Rhys than Ioan, I must say that I also like the moment where Nob calls Annie-Mary a "bloody stupid.. :censored ...... of hell" No so much for the swearing, :???: but because he manages to say one thing with his mouth, but another thing with his eyes. Maybe that's just me. :dunno. It's just that from the first time I saw him say it, he immediately gave me that 'double' feeling and at that time, my focus is this was Ioan, not Matthew. And I didn't know about the following scene. So there must have been 'something' to that line. Off course the hugging moment between Ioan and Matthew after that is also an 'awww' moment.. And the moment where Annie-Mary is crying at their place after the "mouse" incident. You're right, too many favorites and the more often I see it, the more I like it. I don't get tired of it.

Besides the above mentioned singing scene, I like the one when Hob and Nob are talking about the chips and selling them as a fundraiser. To me, they are barely understandable, but . . . oh. . .so . . . funny.

I like the scene when Hob and Nobe are trying to convince Annie Mary to join a singing group to raise funds for charity.

Hey guys! Thanks for your replies. Sylviane, I'm not quite sure what you meant by Matthew having a 'double meaning' when he was talking. What do you think he was really saying? Also, I'm curious to know what you like so much about Matty? (not that I blame you, he is rather dreamy  ) Well, I think I might be in for a bit of a Ioan-fest this weekend. Just bought the 8-disc set of HH last week and I know that my local video store has VAM which I haven't seen for ages but talking about it again makes me want to. Well, have a good weeekend everyone and talk to you soon!

I probably shouldn't have laughed, but when Annie-Mary bumps her head while going through the door, and the boys give a kind of sympathetic groan at her mishap has been a favorite of mine.

I probably shouldn't have laughed, but when Annie-Mary bumps her head while going through the door, and the boys give a kind of sympathetic groan at her mishap has been a favorite of mine. I always 'groan' along with the boys. Sylviane, I'm not quite sure what you meant by Matthew having a 'double meaning' when he was talking. What do you think he was really saying? There is no 'double meaning' in his words, but in his words one side and his attitude on the other. He is verbally very angry at her, but the way he looks at her still has a certain tenderness and care to it. Had the same words been said by Hob it would have had a different meaning, because Hob's body language was different than that of Nob. Also, I'm curious to know what you like so much about Matty? I had not paid much attention to him at first. When I saw VAM I bought it for Ioan and Ioan only. And he was the only one I paid attention to, but you know, after a few times of watching, you start to notice the others too. I knew he was Ioan's best friend and decided to find out more about him, just out of curiosity. Let's be honest, regardless of how endearing VAM is, it did not require very much of the acting-skills from either Ioan or Matthew, they were having a party doing this and it shows. When checking Imdb for Matthew's other work I found out that I already had two other movies with him. "Abduction club" and "Titus". Neither movies are my favorites. But they show two completely different characters that are created by the same actor. Strang is a dark-haired, handsome, charming, bit silly dreamer (no, no, not predictable at all  ) whereas Demetrius is a rapist psychopath with blond hair and tattoos that you would not want to meet in a dark alley. This sparked my interest and I ordered some more material from Amazon and every time he suprised me. But once I saw House of America I was really 'lost'. HoA is not an 'easy,-let's-sit-on-the-couch-and-relax" sort of movie. Matthew plays Boyo, the son of a dysfunctional family, who watches his sister and brother lose themselves in a drug and alcohol enduced fantasy world, while his unstable mother sinks into madness and he discovers the secret of his father’s disappearance. And in this film he goes through an entire range of emotions, from happy, funny, silly to angy, frustrated and totally falling apart to picking himself up again, and about every other thing in between. By the end I just sat there and I knew one thing: Forget Ioan, Matthew is better. :woohoo (No hate-mail, please. ) (This is just a personal opinion and if I didn't think that Ioan was a very good actor too, I wouldn't be here. A cute face is one thing. Being a good actor is another. Some movie producers just don't get that.) Don't know why exactly. He is not really handsome in the way that Ioan and Jamie Bamber for instance are. You know, in a way that immediately catches your eye. But when I see him on the screen, (and one day I hope to see him on the stage, as well) he has a certain presence. He is there, he draws me to him. And he always manages to convince me with the character he's playing. You really have to see him act. Not just look at his pictures. He has a very expressive face and manages to put emotions in his face without having to explain what he's feeling. I guess that Ilovemylife said it best: His essence isn't captured in a still photo. Sorry, to be so long with this post, but get me to start talking about Matthew.....

Thanks, Sylviane, and no need to apologise about the long post. I get what you mean now about the scene in VAM. I watched it last night and I agree, he does still care for her even if he is appalled by what she has done. Also while watching that scene last night, I began to realise what a good actor Matthew is. He is quite versatile in his emotional range and much freer with the way he expresses himself than IG. Ioan's a very mannered actor, every action is deliberate and you can tell as soon as you see him act that he's been to a professional acting school. I know M. has too but I don't know, there's something extra there. So between his acting and those amazing pair of blue eyes, who knows? I may become a "convert" to the Matthew Rhys Appreciation Society but I'd need to see a few more of his movies, I think. You know for, er, research purposes  Can you recommend any for me? PS. Getting back to VAM scenes I love it when he's talking about his mother making Welsh dolls to put over toilet rolls: NOB: Oh, she's a martyr to it! HOB: Oh, she is and now she's off again. I can't stop her!

Ioan's a very mannered actor, every action is deliberate and you can tell as soon as you see him act that he's been to a professional acting school. I know M. has too but I don't know, there's something extra there. Mhmm, tell me about it. I can't stop watching the guy. Seems like there is always another layer to uncover. Oh, and I don't mind the digging :naughty So between his acting and those amazing pair of blue eyes, who knows? I may become a "convert" to the Matthew Rhys Appreciation Society but I'd need to see a few more of his movies, I think. You know for, er, research purposes  Can you recommend any for me? Matthew Rhys Appreciation Society?? :happy Good one! I like it. Recommend? Dangerous, as what I like may not be liked by you. But I would say, try to get your hands on my personal favorite 'Fakers'. (Don't let the cover of the dvd or the start of the movie confuse you, it's a actually a very clever and funny movie). Another one I can't get enough off is 'The Lost world' with also Bob Hoskins, James Fox and Peter Falk, which was shot in New-Zealand. Matthew and dinosaurs, I cannot go wrong there  And because he plays the reporter, he also narrates the story. If you can get your hands on it: "Tabloid" in which he's really sleazy. Totally different again from the other two movies. Also stars John Hurt. Very good is also Deathwatch (bit of a horror/ghost story set in the 1st WW) . There is 'Abduction club', a bit of a silly romantic comedy that also stars Alice Evans. Fortunately they are not eachother's love interest in this movie. Harder to watch (and to get) is House of America. Like I said it's very difficult movie, well worth the watch however. But it always has an impact on me. Not only Matthew, but the actors and actresses are terrific. If you REALLLLLLY want to see him as a different character, try 'Titus' with also Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange. But that is definitely not an easy movie to sit through. Based on Shakespeare it is a really gruesome movie about revenge and hate and madness and calling the character of Demetrius (played by Matthew) is a rapist psychopath who plays a big part in the insanity that goes around. It is as really freaky character allthough I have to admit that seeing him play Demetrius was also interesting. And of course there is Brothers and Sisters, the tv-series that is seemingly popular in America starring Sally Fields, Calista Flockhart and by the way also Rachel 'Annie-Mary' Griffiths. In this series she's his sister. He plays the homosexual lawyer Kevin Walker. I absolutely adore this series. I started to watch because of Matthew and ended up liking the entire Walker-clan. If you run into something that is not mentionned by me, you can always PM me or ask it on the Matthew Rhys thread under 'Not Ioan' thread. I have also posted some sort of bio of him. It starts halfways on page 5 and takes 5 posts, it might tell you more about him. BACK ON TOPIC: I also love when they try to convince Annie-Mary to join this singing groupe and they all go on about how 'brrilllliant' they are. And I almost forgot to mention, the singing together in the church with the end-credits. So cheerfull!! That song always haunts me for days after I watched VAM.

Thanks for that, Sylviane! I think I'll start with Brothers and Sisters, I've heard some good things about that show. Also I'll check out your bio, thanks for the heads-up on that. Another funny scene... when AM tells Colin she'll pay him to kiss her but it will have to be in installments :rotf: Cheers guys and remember.....don't ever stop being you!
