Favorite Childhood TV shows
This one's started at WarriorSelma's suggestion.
What are some of your favorite childhood TV shows?
Let us know if they had any effect on your goals for your future or any of your current life choices.
For instance, I really loved Here Come The Brides. While it wasn't what inspired me to move to the Pacific Northwest, it certainly enhanced my interest in the area. Now living in the area where I visit Seattle, Olympia and Port Townsend - cities mentioned in the show, it really makes me want to revisit the show.

Wow, this could be a long list for me as I was "babysat" by the TV growing up. And none of the shows inspired me to do much. But I have to say - Wonder Woman. She was my first hero to look up to. I mean, the boys had so much with so many different action stars. We girls didn't have much so Wonder Woman.

Two series that I watched as a child were "Starsky and Hutch" and "How the West Was Won".
Gaffer'sGirl- 03-24-2008
Gnat, I didn't watch Wonder Woman much, but I understand what you mean about not many women role models on TV. Cagny and Lacey were a bit inspiring to me. Sad isn't it, how limited the choices were?
Frances, I had a friend whose first car was a Gran Torino due to Starsky and Hutch. I was a Starsky fan and she liked Hutch, though I did have mixed feelings because David Soul was in Here Come the Brides.
How the West Was Won - Bruce Boxleitner (early career) and James Arness - yeah! really liked that show. Reminded me of The Monroes another western favorite.

I fell in love with Dr. Kildare. Oh how fine Richard Chamberlain was in those days! I kept a scrapbook and everything. (They even had "doctor's shirts" with buttons all the way down the left side, and a real doctor's collar on them------I had one, too! Cool, very cool!) I had seriously thoughts of a professional medical career, but found out that I'd have to take lots of math,chemistry------and, I'd seen a few VERY graphic movies at school of various diseases, which put a damper on my plans. But, oh Dr. K., and Ben Casey, too!
Gaffer'sGirl- 03-24-2008
I do remember some of Dr. Kildare and Ben Casey. Usually we got sent to bed before it showed. Richard Chamberlain was quite fine. I really liked him in The Thorn Birds.

As a kid I watched JAG and wanted to become a fighter pilot...
How disappointed I was (am!) that I was left some stupid inch too short to become either fighter pilot or commercial one... My sight would just and just allow me to become commercial pilot but I can't do nothing to my height anymore...

Thanks Gaffer's Girl for creating the tread for me/us! It'll be quite interesting don't you all think so? So let's talk about the shows we all love/d. They don't have to be from the childhood, if you like to talk about some new ones go right ahead. And I think it would be very intriguing to see what we used to watch!
Gnat, before war begun my family always had a TV time and we used to watch all kinds of shows and movies. So I was babysat by TV too!
And by watching some I got inspired but later on lost interest for further career in some of the professions such as nurse, to blame were the shows Doogie Howser, M.D. (don't laugh but I used to watch it when I was 11-12) and E.R. later on (I went to high school for nurses for about four years, we have quite different system of schooling and E.R. was a must see ) and a cop blame goes to Crime Story, Miami Vice and Homicide: Life On The Streets (and many, many more)
Shipmate we didn't (at least I can't remember) watched Dr. Kildare but the name rings a bell, maybe my mum did seen it since we fallowed Thorn Birds and she talked about one other show Richard was in.
And we too liked Thorn Birds, Gaffer's Girl.
And there we have another show that was placed in Australia like my beloved McLeod's Daughters. I mustn't forget about The Return to Eden.
Maybe some of you saw some of those shows I mentioned.
I will talk more about every show I mentioned.
Darn remembering these now I want to go and have a tour on a boat with Sonny Crockett! (And Elvis I suppose! )
Question: Who knows who's Elvis?
Gaffer'sGirl- 03-24-2008
At first, I thought - a singer, of course. Then, I remembered, Elvis is either a crocodile or alligator. Can't remember which. Glad you like the thread, Selma.
Painajainen - my Dad was a pilot for the military, and then flying cargo. For some reason I never caught the bug. Neither did any of my siblings. Maybe too many stories of the dangers he faced. Lots of exciting stories. My only regret is that I never got to fly with him. He does like JAG a lot, so your in good pilot company.

Gaff - yeah I watched that too. Charlie's Angels was another one that was an inspiration to me. And oddly enough, The Facts of Life. I always did like that Jo!
StevieT- 03-25-2008
Well, I've got to say 'The Waltons' and 'Little House on the Prairie'. 'Starsky and Hutch, of couse - Starsky all the way!
Then from our side of the pond, there was 'The Onedin Line' (lots of pre-Hornblower, Hornblower moments!) and 'When the Boat Comes In' ( a family saga of working Geordie folks in the 20s and 30s. Some of which was filmed where I live now and they even used my father-in-law and his horse and cart in one scene, but that was long before I lived here, or even met my husband! )
I could go on, but too much excitement isn't good for you.....
Gaffer'sGirl- 03-25-2008
Sorry to say - we don't or didn't get to see many of your series, Stevie. Occasionally, they would play on PBS. Thank goodness for BBCAmerica now.
I loved The Waltons and Eight is Enough. I think they reminded me of my family at a time I was growing up and ready to leave home.
Gnat - I didn't watch Charlie's Angels much, but I did like Nancy Mckeon in just about everything she did including playing Jo. She just seemed so real and relateable.

.....
Oh! You know when I talked about Hornblower to my parents, they thought I was talking of that series! And went on talking about it and I had to retreat with my Hornblower fangirling... I've been meaning to search for it ever since; I did actually encounter the DVD box but it was rather prizey.

Totally Gaff! In fact a few years back, there was a show on LIFETIME - I think it was called The Precinct. It was about all these female detectives and she was one of them. I watched it specifically because of her. I just thought Jo was the epitome of cool and she was a rebel. That's been me my whole life. I've never been one to follow along, I'm all about the "against the grain" living.
And then of course there was always Sesame Street, The Electric Company and 3-2-1 Contact! I learned a lot from those shows.
Gaffer'sGirl- 03-26-2008
I did see a few episodes of that detective show and liked her in that.
I was too old for Sesame Street etc. Though I do like the songs from Schoolhouse Rock.
