I found out what that object was that the odd looking midshipman was carrying.
Its an instrument to tell time by looking through it towards the sun.
(compliments of "Master and Commander" with Russell Crowe)
I wonder which naval adventure was more "true to life" or maybe they both are. Master and Commander seemed so much darker and chaotic. The men were always all over the place and there seemed to be no comradery (sp) between them. Of course their is not time in a 2 hour film to develop many characters. I found myself missing Styles and Matthews! And of course Bush and Archie.
Yet Russel Crowe in 1800s naval garb was enough to make the film a hit for me. :sun
Master and Commander had a far bigger budget which allowed them to spend money on the little details that probably made it the closer to reality. Given what they had to work with, though, Hornblower wasn't too bad on the historical details.
