I didn't retain very much either and of that mostly pictures, although i have a few hard copies of interviews around the house. Most of what I kept is currently sitting on my computer that failed last night. It's been a :shake pc: sort of day. I had to drive back to Silverdale today and buy a computer plus a few other things because the bridge closes tomorrow and options become more limited. So, it was today or possibly be computerless for six weeks. . Now I get to figure out how to get what was on the old, well used computer onto my new one. It would be much easier if the screen and USB ports were working consistently.

So, it was today or possibly be computerless for six weeks. Almost my worst nightmare, GG! Good luck with the transfer - has the new one got Vista? I think the default skin (macinscott 2) looks fab in Vista.....I could do with an update for the big PC myself, but I'm waiting to see what Windows 7 has to offer (anyone been running the beta?)

So, it was today or possibly be computerless for six weeks. . Being computerless for six weeks would be a nightmare for me. Actually, I wouldn't even be able to work, if I were computerless Now I get to figure out how to get what was on the old, well used computer onto my new one. It would be much easier if the screen and USB ports were working consistently. Well, if you can still switch the old computer on, I guess you can proceed to backup the data as you would have done, had it not failed, and then you can get the data to your new computer. I know that when his old computer badly crashed, my cousin removed the hard drive from it and then connected it to his new computer and thus he was able to recover data from his old computer.

Yes, my computer has Vista. I was hoping to hold out, but just not possible. Frances - I may have to have that done with my hard drive, too. The screen comes up and then disappears. The software from the spare monitors I have were never loaded onto the new computer, so I can't see to download to my CD drive. Much is downloaded except for the very latest.and some non-essentials and some pictures. Nothing that'll pain me too much, but will be missed. (like some Ioan pics  )

I'm sorry about the computer problems! :hug

Shipmate- 04-30-2009

Ooooooo,so sorry,GG. Believe me I feel your pain about THAT!! Much good luck with the new one. I have to admit,I wish I had a new(er) one myself.

Gaffer'sGirl- 04-30-2009

Thanks for the empathy. Still haven't tried to start the old one to see if I can transfer. I may have to do it on my next day off.

Nicolette- 05-01-2009

You are welcome. I know something about computer problems!

Frances- 05-01-2009

Though my computer is working fine, I'm about to change it, as my brother (the one who is studying engineering) assembled a computer for me that is newer and better than the one I have now, so I'll have to go through a data backup and transfer process soon, though I don't feel like it. However, I remember the few weeks that led up to the purchase of my current and soon-to-be-discarded computer as very stressful because my old computer came on only if it so wished. There were times when I needed to work on it, but it refused to come to life when I tried to switch it on, while it did if I tried again one hour or so later... Computers...

I know too much about computer problems and how to fix them. But I'm now retired  Now I get to do what I want. Which has more to do with gardening and horses. Vista is OK on computers with enough horse power to run it. It has some good features, mainly to do with security. Homemade computers can be good. Backups are essential, although I'm the worst about it, as are most IT people. I love my iMac, although now I'm going to spruce it up. And fix my iPhoto database. I need Gimp to do graphics. I feel for you all, but it's hard to help you. Oh, changing computers is the worst. That's why I have one from work (I have yet to clean out my office) that is 7-years old. I probably have some Ioan stuff there.

I've had a few Mac computers over the years and really enjoyed working on them. If not for the expense and difficulty in finding programs for a number of years, I probably would have stuck with them. Some one at work suggested my problem may be related to a power issue. If it's compatible, I may try the power cord from my new computer and see if I can get the old one working well enough to download some materials. We shall see. :dunno

I've been working on Mac computers for 15 years and I would never buy a PC, but I admit that their costing more to buy that PCs and their offering not as much choice for programs as there is for PCs can be a problem

It is something that often goes wrong with computers. But usually, the power supply is an all or nothing proposition.

Personaly I've got problems too. At the "memory Testing", whe the computer starts. It "blocks", it doens't do the "Memory Testing". And it stay that way indefinetly. I have to stop the computer, open it and touch the two memorys "sticks", then re-start the computer. It works for the moment that way. Still BIZARRE and BORING knowing it's a recent computer. Pffff

Blimey, Nic! That sounds dangerous!
