Thanks, GG! Boy, you guys eat alot of corn! I think we eat more wheat and oats, maybe. I remember being in California on the way to San Diego and chatting with the bus driver. He said the miles of corn fields we were passing were all for popcorn, which had to be a certain type (I don't recall which.) It's one of those snapshots in time you never forget!
You ought to see the Midwest. Indiana is like a Popcorn Kingdom. It's where Orville Redenbacher started his business. My Grandpa grew sweet corn, so we'd get it fresh when we'd visit him. He always made us shuck it and make sure all the little hairs were off. Roasted on the cob with butter and salt is one of my favorite ways of eating it.
My Dad's friend who had never seen Corn fields before called them "Corn Trees" and gave my Grandpa quite a chuckle, so we've called them Corn Trees ever since.
Ooooh, I eat Redenbacher's popcorn - salt and butter is my fave too! i would love to taste it fresh like that, GG........mmmmmm!
At the end of summer, there is an old man who sells fresh corn from his truck about a mile from us. It is the best corn I've ever tasted. Must say his years of experience show. We have a lot of roadside stands around here where people sell excess produce from their backyard gardens on the honor system. My sister and brother-in-law do this with their fresh eggs. It really does make a difference in flavor.
See Stevie? I told you to leave it to the experts!
Thanks for that Gaff! You're so knowledgable! Southern Illinois has a lot of corn as well. A LOT. And I agree, corn on the cob with lots of melted butter is the best!!!
I suppose Southern Illinois and Iowa would compete with Indiana in corn production, but a lot of that is for grain, ethenol, etc. Popcorn = Indiana pretty much.
Never really thought about that Gaff. But you're right about Mr. Redenbacher. I think our corn is also used a lot for consumption. God know we have enough city/state/county fairs during the summers here in Illinois!
Yeah! Corn on the cob, Corn dogs and Kettle Corn are a county fair staples all over the country. Not to mention Corn chips for nachos. Or my personal favorite Fritos. We do eat a lot of corn. What are we going to do when they use it all to produce Ethanol.
DRINK the stuff,I suppose?!?!
:rotf: Figuring price per gallon, do you think it will cost more than a soda? I'm not sure I could stomach corn flavored soda.
 Of course there is already high fructose corn syrup that we drink by the gallon.
Gaff - amen on the Fritos girl! Still my favorite chip. As for the use of corn for ethanol, that's part of the problem we're having right now with food (especially meats) being so expensive. The price of corn has gone up because farmers have to compete with buying corn for feed as well as growing it for ethanol. It's all so very frustrating!! :wall:
But as for the corn flavored pop? Yeah I'll be taking a pass on that myself.
Corn syrup? Yeah, it's the root of all evil.
