"Amazing Grace," "Bella" and "Ratatouille" were among the winners announced Tuesday night from the Christian Film & Television Commission, which awards movies based on Biblical principals and positive family values.
Sometimes deemed the "Christian Oscars," the16th Annual Faith & Values Awards Gala was held at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The event was hosted by Ted Baehr, founder and publisher of Movieguide and movieguide.org, a Christian-based website that ranks movies.
"Amazing Grace," based on the life of antislavery pioneer William Wilberforce, took the $50,000 John Templeton Foundation Epiphany Prize for films. Taking the same prize for television was the drama "Valley of Light," a Hallmark Hall of Fame production about homeless World War II veteran Noah Locke played by actor Chris Klein.

Good to learn that AG won a prize!
Besides winning the Epiphany Prize for Inspiring Movies & Television, AG was also nominated for The 10 Best Films for Mature Audiences Award (http://www.movieguideawards.com/2008/maturefilms.html), while Ioan and Albert Finney were nominated for the Grace Awards for Inspiring Acting in Movies & Television (http://www.movieguideawards.com/2008/grace.html).

Hey! THAT'S very cool too!!! Really nice news to hear, Frances, some recognition over-due I'd say. Albert Finney is a great choice too! Hooray!

Very nice to hear. Congrats to Ioan. I wonder if he attended the awards.
I've been doing the "Take in the Oscars Nominated films tour" before the ceremony. Must say I found this film as well made and certainly more enjoyable to watch than some of those up for awards. Until the last week or so that it played, everywhere I went to see Amazing Grace, the theater was full and people clapped at the end of the movie.
Last night I saw "There Will Be Blood". Daniel Day-Lewis did have a great performance, but at the end of the movie, my thought was 'What was the point?' Spending almost three hours in the theater did nothing to enhance my life or understanding of it. Though some scenes were riveting, I can't say it was even entertaining. Guess I better start a thread on Non-Ioans for this.
Anyway I am still quite shocked that it has received such little attention elswhere. I mean Norbit was nominated for best Make-up. Norbit! In AG, they had to age everyone over several decades of time. Not even costume design! I guess much of it does come down to clout in the industry.
I do hope Ioan is quite proud that he starred and gave a wonderful performance in a film that sticks with you and has meaning.

Congrats to all the winners! I loved Ratatouille and thought it was the best family film I have seen in a long time.
I am sorry to say I have not seen Amazing Grace yet, but hope to as well. Glad to see Ioan finally getting back in stride with this film. Quality work is clearly recognized.
Reminds me of the old days when S&G was nominated for an Oscar.
I hope more projects of this calibre role Ioan's way.

I agree with you. I don't often put too much stock into what critics say or what the mainstream press says is worthy of this or that. It's the critics job to be a bit overly critical and besides they are just people like you and I. Who's to say that their opinion is higher than mine or yours? And yes politics and clout and alot of things that are not related to the actual acting (what it should be about any way) play a role in things like this.
I loved Amazing Grace. One may expect it to be preachy because of the subject matter (slavery) but it was not and it was just a very good movie. Critics are always complaining about how there's nothing for "famlee viewing" anymore and everything is so violent and sex oriented and when something comes along that is not such as Amazing Grace, they don't give it any attention.
And regarding the aging in AG, in particular with Benedict Cumberbatch (sp?), he seemed to go down and age quicker than William Wilberforce and they had him looking almost like a completely different man by the time his character expired. So they did a nice job with that.
OT: I laughed out loud when you said that about Norbit though

Well, reviews may be useful, if you're aware they're just opinions and you know what to make of them. The newspaper that I usually read has two film critics and I found out that while I usually agree with what one says, I mostly disagree with what the other says (that is I usually dislike the movies that he considers masterpieces and gives 4 or 5 stars to, and I like the movies he dislikes and gives 2 stars to) and I use their reviews accordingly when I have to decide which movies to go see.

This is really incredible news!! Thanks for posting!!

Ringtones - I agree. Benedict Cumberpatch's make-up in particular was especially well done. Make-up is so important in a film like AG that changes back and forth between time frames. If well done, it is one of the foremost ways to tell that time has changed.
Frances - That's similar to what I do with the critics I read.

Ringtones, I couldn't agree with you more. I love the film too. Hope everyone gets to see it soon. I think it's really worth the time.

I'm so glad to hear that Amazing Grace has finally won an award it as well deserved!
BridgeofSighs- 02-19-2008
hmm
I wonder would Ioan get upset if someone mentioned his more risque roles like 'Love in the 21st Century' or S & G, and asked whether the Christian Oscar judges had seen these??
Doubt he'd care, after all, the mark of a good actor is that he can do well in a wide range of roles.
StevieT- 02-19-2008
I doubt he'd care either, Bridge. AG is a Christian film of sorts,I suppose, so was bound to be recognised by these awards. I'm glad he's nominated, but I just wonder how much kudos goes with it, that's all. It hardly launched the career of a certain other nominee, did it? And I tried to watch that particular film and had to turn off after 20 minutes, it was so awful....... (:tsk tsk: General, there's honesty, and then there's tactful honesty!)
