Congrats to the US and Michael Phelps who has his 8 Olympic medals. He has beaten Mark Spitz. Here he is called the Olympic wonder of all times.
CherryCokeGrl- 08-17-2008
It sure was amazing to see Phelps reach his Olympic dream of 8 gold medals!!! :) I'm so happy for him. It was so sweet to see his mom in the stands and I think even she was amazed at all he has done. :) I'm proud of the other US mens swimmers too because without their help he never would have been able to do it.
I think there is more Women's gymnastics on tonight at around 11pm EST here in the USA. Does anyone know when more of the Men's gymnastics will be on or did I miss the individual event medals??
CherryCokeGrl- 08-17-2008
I looked at the TV guide website & It said that the Women's and Men's events will be held tonight. Alicia is supposed to be doing her Vault routine tonight as well :) I sure hope she does great & can win a medal :)
GinaP- 08-18-2008
Oh well, it hasn't been Alicia's Olympics this year. It is so heartbreaking to see people not do their best when they have worked so hard for so many years. But I guess the pressure is just overwhelming.
But it was Johnson and Luikin again, winning silver and bronze in floor, with a stunner by the Romanian gymnast (sorry don't remember her name).
Looking forward to more gymnastics tomorrow, too bad it is all so late at night.
Best to all,
GinaP

Having the opportunity to watch Michael Phelps win eight gold medals with seven world records was incredible. I was visiting my sister and her husband and neither of them is old enough to remember when Mark Spitz astonished everyone by winning seven, but I sure remember. Everyone thought it was impossible. And now, thirty-six years later, that record has been beaten. I wonder if anyone will be able to beat Michael Phelp's record in my lifetime.

Cherry and GinaP - I'm in 100% agreement with you in everything you said about the women's gymnastics. I didn't really want to bring up the whole underage thing in here because I didn't want it to sound like "whining". But I have to say that I've been reading more and more news articles that are voicing very loudly that the whole reason for the IOC to even set these Olympics here in Beijing was to open China up to a new trust and cooperation and alliance with the Western world. Kinda hard to do that when they cheat and allow athletes in to compete who have no business doing so. It's disappointing that they would go forward with it; but it's even more disappointing that the IOC and the gymnastics federation are turning a blind eye to the whole business. Unfortunately there's nothing to be done now. But if the Chinese were to uphold true sportsmanship they would come clean. And those girls who won medals (both in the team finals as well as the other individual events) should be made to give them back. To me, it's the same type of cheating as the doping. But it won't happen and in any case both Nastia and Shawn proved that years of experience and training won out over being a young, fearless girl. I was so proud of both of our girls. Especially Nastia who only a year ago was being hounded by the media as being "too old" and "maybe passed her prime for competition" at this level. She battled serious injury last year and now she stands the best all around gymnast in the world. I was so happy for her.
Michael Phelps - well I don't think there are any words left to describe what he's been in these games. That race Friday night, where he literally won the gold by 1/100ths of a second??? Unbelievable!
It would just be nice, though, for once to have an Olympics without any controversy. :hmm:
Shipmate- 08-18-2008
All I can say up to this point,is that the US athletes have performed admirably and should all be so proud and pleased with each of their individual performances. Whether they have taken a medal or not, each has done his/her best to represent our country, and has made a fine example of perseverence, courage, and endurance under enormous pressure. Congratulations to each one of them!!!! We're proud of all of you ------ keep going--------- :applause:  :applause:
Gaffer'sGirl- 08-18-2008
Nastia and Shawn did so well last night. It was really fun to watch. Although I felt sorry for Alicia and in a sense Shawn because she was so close to the Gold once again, and then to have it disappear. Perhaps she will be motivated to continue on to London in 2012.
I look forward to seeing more gymnastics tonight. Right now I'm watching some volleyball as the U.S. men try to overcome the tragedy that happened to their coach's family.
GNAT0629- 08-19-2008
I hate to make this sound like a big complaint but I'm sorry...Nastia was robbed of a gold medal on the uneven bars. That was atrocious judging. Her score should have been higher, especially when in comparison to the Chinese girl who won the gold. She made more noticeable and bigger mistakes than Nastia did. I have no idea how these judges are scoring or what competition they're watching, but it's not the one I was watching. That decision was pathetic. Nastia is the rightful gold medal winner on the bars!
And as for Alicia Sacramone - my understanding is once again somehow there was bias shown towards China on the vault. How does a girl who completely botches her vault landing win any kind of medal over a girl who executes her vault flawlessly???? I'm completely astounded by what's been going on during this competition. Alicia should have won a medal on vault, period.
On the upswing - US women's soccer team made it to the gold medal final match! That's awesome!
Oh and Jonathon Horton of the US won a silver on the high bar! YAY!! :pink ellie The only medal given to any of the US men in an individual event these games.
CherryCokeGrl- 08-19-2008
That's wonderful news about Jonathon Horton winning the silver medal on high bar! He has worked really hard for that. :)
I agree completely about Nastia losing her gold medal on bars all because of some stupid tie breaker system when she was clearly the better performer in the 1st place!!! UGH!!! My sisters & I were watching & it was just heart breaking to see her look at her Dad and say something like "How did I lose my gold medal". :( Its just so sad to see all her hard work basically go down the drain. They have got to fix this olympic gymnastics system before the next games. They were saying on NBC how other olympic sports will give 2 gold medals if there is a tie... but no gymnastics has to be difficult & different. Even though Nastia and her dad know she was a gold medal winner it still hurts to know that you had it taken away. :(
On a positive note... I'm soooo happy for Mae & Walsh for making it to the final medal round in women's volleyball!!! YAY!!! I sure hope they keep their winning streak up!!! Go girls!!!
GNAT0629- 08-20-2008
Cherry - I know. My heart broke for her.
On the upside, Shawn Johnson FINALLY won her gold medal! And on the last day of gymnastics too. It was beautiful to watch. She and Nastia both did so well in these games and I'm so proud of them and happy for them. Although once again I feel Nastia's score was a bit low for the routine she did which was flawless save for the dismount. But Shawn didn't do her dismount 100% clean either so how there could be such a HUGE difference in score is yet another mystery lost on me. BUT........they went 1 and 2 for the US again and overall US women's gymnastics has something to be very proud of. Not to mention, something to build on. I think the American team can only grow and get better thanks to these 2 outstanding women.
I'm very excited about Misty and Kerri! I love them - they're awesome to watch. And let's not forget about our guys in beach volleyball who also made it to the gold medal finals. Awesome!!!
And the US softball team had to fight for their win against Japan to advance to the gold medal game - good luck and great job to them as well! Especially since we won't see them in London in 4 years time. ;angry:
But what is going on with our track and field team???? So much hope, so many expectations and they all seem to be falling flat out there!!!
Gaffer'sGirl- 08-20-2008
The gymnastics finals were very exciting last night. I was quite happy for Shawn Johnson finally winning a gold, but did have difficulty making sense of the scoring sometimes. As you said Gnat, why was Nastia scored so much lower. And the uneven bars were even more confusing. Not so much the tie-breaker, although it does seem an unreliable way to do it. I was more upset by the initial score Nastia got vs. the Chinese gymnast. Certainly, I'm no expert, but she should have been the outright Gold medalist from what it looked like and the commentary of Tim Daggett as to mistakes made by Nastia vs. those of the Chinese gymnast.
I look forward to watching the Beach Volleyball finals.
Did anyone see Lolo Jones' heartbreaking trip over the hurdle when she was in the lead during the 100 meter hurdles? Quite sad for her. Dawn Harper also an American won and appeared to be in shock that she won.
marthe- 08-21-2008
Our Belgian football team did not win the match against Nigeria and so they can not play the final. They have to play for the bronze against Brazil.
For the moment we have not one medal yet.
Our hope is now set on Tia Hellebaut who place herself for playing the final in the high jump.
Gaffer'sGirl- 08-21-2008
Marthe - I wish them good luck in their pursuit. I hope Belgium is able to win a medal.
GNAT0629- 08-21-2008
Gaff - yeah that was my gripe about the uneven bars final as well. There should have been no tie breaker necessary, Nastia had a much cleaner performance. But oh well, nobody wants to dispute anything for fear that the IOC won't grant the US the 2016 Games. Overall it was probably the most successful run for US women's gymnastics I've seen in some time. Two of our gymnasts winning so many medals, not to mention going 1-2 in two finals. Amazing!
On to beach volleyball - congrats to Misty and Kerri for their second Olympic gold medal and 108th straight win!!!! The game was shown here very late so I couldn't watch it and I so wished I had. I heard about the win this morning and was very excited! Especially since it's a very real possibility that they won't be back for 2012. I read they want to start families and I don't blame them. They've had a very long run of success and we're all very proud of them.
But what is happening to our track and field athletes???? They can't seem to be able to do anything????
I won't print anymore results as I've seen posted on the internet but they won't be shown until later on tonight. Some ups and many down for us Americans though is all I can say.
Marthe - I, too, hope that Belgium takes a medal in the high jump. I love stories about obscure athletes or countries winning medals. Especially when the athlete isn't expected to win or the country is just so small and doesn't win many medals. I read the other day of an athlete who competed in either wrestling or tae kwon do or something - he was from Afghanistan. He won a medal, the first for his country. And since his country is still be ravaged by war, it was a HUGE accomplishment for him and his country. Pretty awesome.
