Baby Tips
Do you have any tips or tricks for the prospective parents? A faster, more effcient way to diaper a baby. A special song that works as a lullabye or a game to entertain a cranky babe. A way to tell if it's a burp or a true smile. You can even share a special story about a baby close to you if you think it will be helpful to new parents caring for their precious little one.

Hey, What do any of you out there think of the practice of "swaddling" a new-born baby???? I see on ------------www.parenting.ivillage.com ---------------where they give instuctions for wrapping baby, and the whole deal. I've got a friend who loved the technique with her little one.

I've heard it's very useful for making a baby feel secure, but have never tried it.

Tiny babies seem to find security in swaddling - we often use it to settle them at work (neonatal surgical PICU is part of my job  ), as long as they're not overheated. (and it also prevents tiny fingers pulling at things they shouldn't, like cannulas and NG tubes  ) One of my own babies loved to be swaddled, the other hated it. I guess a new parent is soon going to find out which it is - better buy Ioan some earplugs, just in case! :granny: Stevie

Here comes a stupid question from me-----babies and hiccups-----any suggestions? They seem to get frustrated by them, and they don't know what to do with 'em.

StevieT- 05-29-2009

There's an old wives tale here, that says it means a baby is thriving. We also use gripe water (tho it's not as effective since they removed the alcohol  ) Boiled water can work too! :granny: Stevie

How cool, wonder if that is the case on how to handle them in other countries as well?

Shipmate- 05-30-2009

What suggestions does anyone have for a colicky baby???????????

StevieT- 05-30-2009

Same as hiccups - correct (and enthusiastic) winding, tummy rubbing, gripe water, boiled water and ultimately pacing the floor every evening between six and ten with a miniature screaming banshee on your shoulder (but that last one may just have been me  ) :granny: Stevie

Grip water is great, but not used in the US very much. I had to track it down. We tried swaddling my son, but he would always punch his way out of it. :) My favorite baby item was a baby sling. I never bought a bulky carriage, and just carried him everywhere :) GinaP

I've seen a lot of people use a baby sling and they seem great - usuable by both Mom or Dad. They keep your baby real close, but allow the parent to use both hands for chores. Babies just seem to sleep away. Great suggestion, Gina.

My favorite baby item was a baby sling. I never bought a bulky carriage, and just carried him everywhere :) My brother and my sister-in-law used a baby sling when their children were babies and it worked very well for them, too, so I subscribe to your suggestion, Gina.

Maybe this should be entitled 'Baby Tips - NOT!' The video is a little lengthy but worth it - I found it hilarious! <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://funnyvideos.todaysbigthing.com/betamax/betamax.swf?item_id=1729&fullscreen=1" width="480" height="360"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain"> <param name="allowfullscreen" value="true"> <param name="movie" quality="best" value="http://funnyvideos.todaysbigthing.com/betamax/betamax.swf?item_id=1729&fullscreen=1"> </object><div> Many thanks to the guys at Street Carnage and Today's Big Thing!

That was hilarious. The baby was just adorable. I love the laugh. And the guy spanks the baby just the way I spank Gaffer when he barks. I put two fingers up, he walks over, lays down, I tap him with two fingers and he stops barking. Really weird!

Too funny!!!! I could just devour that child---on the spot! What a cutey~~~~~~
