Ax Men - History Channel
Last Thanksgiving, my nephew let us know that he was going to be on this History Channel show starting about the third or fourth episode. The third episode will air next week on Monday nights at 10:00 in the States. It is sort of a Docudrama about loggers in the Pacific Northwest. Not actors, real people. Evidently, he replaced one of the young guys on a logging crew. As he said, he is the greenhorn that they all yell at, because he doesn't know anything. And he really didn't know anything. It was very tough work, but he stuck it out for the rest of the season. However, I don't think he'll go back.
In a weird coincidence, one of guys who came to trim my trees yesteday used to work for the same logging outfit. He said that they were very hard to work for, yelling all the time, etc. So, more kudos to Austin that he made it through the experience. So, if any of you end up watching the series, his name is Austin or "the kid who gets yelled at".

I hope I will be able to watch this. I love docudramas.

I guess it's kind of a reality show in a sense. It is meant to show the difficulties loggers face working a job that not many would want to do. I've only caught it occasionally in the past, but am watching this season because of Austin.

I've caught afew of them and it's strangely compelling! Is it filmed up around your way then, GG? The trouble with cable is you get different series of the same show showing on different channels, and then they repeat the episodes and it gets so confusing!!!!! I will try and catch Austin, though

Totally understand that it's confusing. It's the same here. In America, his episodes start either this week or the next. The Rygard crew is from our area and work in the general vicinity. The one that does the water logging works on the West side of the Peninsula nearer to Forks and the others are in Oregon. It is truly dangerous, so perhaps that is why it is compelling and they are kind of tough characters. Hope you get to see Austin.

I caught a glimpse of my nephew Austin tonight on Ax Men. Actually it was the preview for next week's show. This week, the young greenhorn for Rygard Logging quit and Austin will be replacing him next week. Austin knew next to nothing about logging and at Thanksgiving he said, " I'm the guy they yell at all the time." It was very tough, but he stuck it out, so no matter how he is portrayed, I'm proud of him.

I know you are,GG. Those shows reaaly could put a physical and mental strain on the contestants! I don't have all those stations on my tv,but I'd sure watch him if I did.
Gaffer'sGirl- 04-30-2009
Evidently, he is in some of the commercials this week. He did say it was tough to stick it out, but he did. Guess he needed the work. I'll probably try and get the DVD's later. Kind of fun to see him, and then run into him around town.
Shipmate- 04-30-2009
Oh yeah,it HAS to be......he's a 'star',isn't he?!!
Gaffer'sGirl- 05-05-2009
Austin finally made his debut on Ax Men last night. Yah! He was very natural on camera and didn't seem too nervous. He seemed to take being "the greenhorn" in stride. Hope some of you can catch the show. Figuring out the schedule on History Channel shows can be difficult. As of last night, there was no picture of him on the Ax Men website, but there was a mention of the episode.

Last night, the final two episodes of Ax Men were on TV. Austin was in both of them for quite a while and they were complimentary of his work ethic. When I looked up the show on Wikipedia and History.com, Austin is mentioned in the comments on the forums which is kind of fun.

I'm so sorry I can't get the channel the Ax Men is on,GG. I would have loved to have seen him go through his paces on the show. Know you had lots of fun watching him. I know how interested and excited I'd be if someone in my family were involved in such a program!
Gaffer'sGirl- 05-21-2009
I believe they show some clips or episodes on History.com's Ax Men page after the episode has aired. You might be able to see it at the library. I'll be getting the DVD.

Congrats GG and to your nephew! I've not seen the show.
When I first saw the thread title, I was thinking Gimli.
Gaffer'sGirl- 05-21-2009
Gilmli - that's pretty funny.
Austin came in as the subsititute greenhorn for someone who quit. He had a good attitude, partially because he came into it knowing that his role was "the one who knows nothing and gets yelled at". The danges of the job are real, but of course the editing is slanted to create more drama. He did climb a tree and fell one. The safety training was more than was shown on screen. They liked him a lot , commented on his committment and upbringing and wanted to hire him to stay on, but he decided logging wasn't in his future. Great experience for a young kid though and he showed himself well.
