Another Life
Ok I saw this movie for the first time several weeks ago. Another Life. I really liked it but I didn't know it was something that actually happend! What does everyone else think about this Ioan movie??

I think this movie has a brooding undrcurrent that draws you in. You really care about the characters. Ioan's character has those flashs of hot visciousness and sulky immaturity, we don't often get to see him work with. The film is one of my favourites - and the Chaplin scene is adorable........I'm in love with Freddy Bywaters ( use me, Freddy!) :naughty

I love this one. In fact I'm watching it right now (for about the hundredth time  ). It's really involving and moving, but also very funny. And such a great cast. I really like Nick Moran as Percy, it's so different to Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (the only other thing I've seen him in). I love the Chaplin scene as well :love2: , and the dance scene. And some others that I'll leave to your imagination. :naughty But Ioan's wig . I know they didn't have much of a budget but surely they could have come up with something better.

Is it a wig? I thought they'd just used so much hairspray to keep his curls straight, it had set like cardboard......much like the clip from Pobol Y Cwm

He'd shaved his head for Black Hawk Down, and gone straight on to Another Life, so had to wear a wig. I can probably dig up the article where he talks about it.

Ooooh, didn't realise that, ricki. Cheers! (I'm not big on chronology!)

Ricki when you find that article could I have a look?? I really got into the film. Another Life but I do get abit emotionally attached and keep thinking I can change that out come. I really love the characters they get to you. As for Black Hawk Down...now that I really liked.... I think B/c I am a sucker for a man in uniform. Would have been good to see him in another action like this one.

Another great performance that we miss in the U.S. The clips I've seen including the Charlie Chaplin sequence really make me want to see it. As for wigs and Ioan, the only one I've seen that looked close to as decent as his own hair was the young Wilberforce wig. Later one - not so attractive, but I don't think it was meant to be. They got the loose curls right for young Wilby. Even on a low budget, a decent wig for your main performer isn't that much of an expense and well worth while for the viewer. Gaffer's Girl

Ricki when you find that article could I have a look?? Sure. I'll post the relevant part here and PM you the rest if you like. Bear with me while I sort through a couple of hundred interviews though.

Finally got my chance to see Another Life and Freddy Bywaters. I think the movie grew on me as I watched it. I felt so terrible for Freddy. Even with his actions, I got the feeling he was more used than the user. Ioan's ability to play innocence well helped make Freddy, like Bossiney in Forsyte Saga a very sympathetic stealer of unhappy wives.

StevieT- 11-22-2007

Yes, GG, I had alot of sympathy for Freddy too. I think he just got in way over his head. Another character I liked was Edie's sister (whose name escapes my scatty mind  ) I ached for the way Freddy let her down, gentle as it was...... It was these insightful little moments, intermingled as they were with the fiery passion and angst, that made the film for me.....

Gaffer'sGirl- 11-22-2007

Now I have to think - her name was - nope - have to put the CD back in - oh drat! Avis or something like that. Yes, I did feel bad for her having been in that "Can't we just be best pals?" situation a few times myself. Makes you wonder what would have happened if Freddy and Avie had gotten together, but then it might have ended even worse if Edith and Freddy had still ended up loving each other. I got the feeling that Edie didn't have a realistic view of life. She saw Percy as a hero until she really got to know him and I think she saw Freddy as an adventurer and her rescuer, but didn't really take the best thing for him into account.

I got the feeling that Edie didn't have a realistic view of life. She saw Percy as a hero until she really got to know him and I think she saw Freddy as an adventurer and her rescuer, but didn't really take the best thing for him into account. I agree. I guess, that had she divorced Percy and had an open relationship with Freddie, with the usual cooking, cleaning and domestic problems, she would have grown bored with him as well. But maybe Freddie would have been able to communicate with her on a different level, rather than boss her around and trying to 'tame' her like Percy did. Allthough, in Edith's defence, I have to admit that had Percy been MY husband, I would have killed him myself, because as soon as they were married he changed too. Seemed as if everything he liked about her before (such as her unpredictability) just had to be destroyed. And trying to control another person's spirit is never a good idea. It will break loose somehow.

I also think that had Percy been my husband, I would have either killed him or walked out on him, so I can't blame Edith for betraying him. However, I agree with you, ladies, that Edith has a romantic rather than realistic view of life and I'm not sure her relationship with Freddy would have survived if it had gone open/official.
