AG: Dinner Impossible
Go Ioan! I love that man! He uses Welsh whenever possible and coming from someone in his position, that goes a long way toward promoting the language. Last night I was watching Chef Robert Irvine pull off another miracle Dinner Impossible. I love to watch Robert. The first time you see him you expect he’ll be hell on wheels, but he’s not and he not only manages to make incredibly delicious looking food, he does it in less time than it takes me to pick out a new dress. Anyway, last night he was cooking for the premiere of Amazing Grace - so it was a repeat. But I hadn’t seen it. After the premiere, everyone showed up for food and drinks. Well, Robert decided to cook Cornish Pasties in honour of his ‘fellow countryman’ who turned out to be none other than Ioan Gruffudd! Well, after all the goodies were consumed, Ioan paid him a visit in the kitchen and before leaving thanked Chef Robert, are you ready, in Welsh! Yep, he said “Diolch yn fawr” - you could have knocked me over with a feather to hear Welsh spoken on American TV. He followed immediately with the English translation, of course for the benefit of all and sundry. To say I was chuffed to bits is an understatement. Da Iawn Ioan! http://www.forumwales.com/fwblog/2007/08/23/go-ioan/

(Posting above by Arwen at ForumWales. ) It was fun to watch this again. Just when you think Irvine will not be able to pull it off, he does! It was nice that Ioan could pay a visit to the 'kitchen', taste, and thank the chefs.

Awe, too cool!!! I wish I could have seen it!!

Cherry - keep an eye out on Food Network as they frequently replay their shows and Dinner Impossible is on that channel. Also take a look at this site http://www.tv-now.com/stars/gruffudd.html It doesn't display talk show performances, but I do think it has a link to another site. This shows movies or TV movies being shown on TV. Hope it helps. GG

Aww! I love to hear Ioan speak in Welsh. Though I have no clue what on earth he is saying. Which reminds me - there is a video on youtube.com that he is interviewed and he speaks all Welsh and I wanna know what he is saying. I need a translator ;)

As I remember it from IOL, they are talking about poetry. Here's the translation of the traditional Welsh poem that Ioan recites in the opening. Check the comments for more. By the seaside there are red roses By the seaside there are white lilies By the seaside is my sweetheart Sleeping at night and rising in the morning. By the seaside is a level stone Where I spoke a word with my love Around it grows the lily And an occasional sprig of rosemary. By the seaside are blue stones By the seaside are the sons' flowers By the seaside is every virtue By the seaside is my sweetheart.

Thanks for the clip and the translation, ladies. The poem Ioan is reciting with Matthew Rhys is MORFUDD LIKE THE SUN by Dafydd ap Gwilym "I'm waiting for a soft-voiced maid, like a hue of fine snow on a sunny field, God knows she's radiant. Bright as a white wave, like sunlight, modest. She knows how to prise a love-song from my lips - Like sun upon a cloud! A mantle of fine fur - mocking an ugly man. Exquisite Morfudd, woe the weak poet who loves her. A web of gold: Woe the goodly man who cries in anguish. Great her deceit and trickery But more than anything: she's my darling. Sometimes she appears in church and court: sometimes, proud maid, lime-white, radiant Morfudd hides, between fort-battlements. Sun-ringed round with lively goodness, she fosters the sunlight. Her precious office is praiseworthy, May's merchant, light-giving. Radiant Morfudd's long expected, Bright, lovely mirror of splendid May."
