Though I would have liked AG to be nominated, I'm not entirely sad either, because Hugh was nominated for best actors in a drama series and the movies I've seen that are in the list of nominees deserved their nomination.

... because in a world where several equally deserving films come out every year, judges are more likely to vote for a film that they have just seen rather than one that they saw 20 films earlier, because it is cheaper for studios to release the award contenders late in the year so they can combine promotion for the film with award campaigning, or ...
The studios do send out "For Your Consideration" DVD's to members of the Academy so there is still a good chance an early film will be considered. I have no idea if AG's producers sent out DVDs.
And another consideration is the fact that "family" rated films rarely get the nods in the big categories. It does happen, but overall they are overlooked.
I make a practice of avoiding R-rated movies so I rarely see the movies nominated in the top 5 categories.

Well, I guess members of Academy receive dozens of DVDs each year, so your film can easily be overlooked without some award campaigning.
I have no idea if and how heavily AG's producers campaigned for a place... I thin it is possible that award nominations were not their priority.

Indeed Fran. Michael Apted has said more than once that he wasn´t expecting any award. So has Ioan in a recent interview. Let´s hope they get nomination either way.
Glad that you are happy for Hugh too Frannie!!!!!!!

Well.... SAG nominations were this morning and again.... no nominations to Amazing Grace sadly. However Hugh Laurie got his nomination For Outstanding actor in a drama series. Congrats once again to Hugh, and better luck on the Oscars to AG and Ioan!!!!!!!!!
JeepGirl83- 12-28-2007
I'm still hoping for the Oscars!
Gaffer'sGirl- 12-30-2007
That would be nice and if not this year, certainly hoping for in the future.
Silvia- 12-30-2007
Indeed, GG! But let´s wait and see what happens with the Oscars
zoo.station- 12-30-2007
I'm not so sure Amazing Grace stands any hope at the Oscars. Simply because it's the Oscars, they are so prestigious and such a fantastic thing to have to your name, Amazing Grace didn't get any recognition in the SAGs or the Golden Globes, so why would it for the Oscars?
Amazing Grace was a fantastic movie, and yes, the actors all did fantastic jobs but it simply doesn't seem good enough to get an Oscar. Their best hope would be Albert Finney for Best Supporting if they don't get nominated for that, I doubt they'll get nominated for anything. Sorry to be a wet blanket but honestly, it's a good movie but not good enough for the Oscars.

Sadly, I have to agree with you about the Oscars, Zoo. Perhaps they might get attention at the BAFTA's since the cast and director were British.

Sadly, I think the people who decide on nominations are not always looking for the same thing we are in a 'good' movie. To me, AG is certainly 'good enough' drama, photography and design-wise to win a nomination, but perhaps does not appeal to a wide enough audience for the selection board?
zoo.station- 12-31-2007
Well I disagree, I don't believe it is good enough but I do agree that it not having a wide enough audience would also contribute to not having a nomination.

I agree. I really enjoyed Amazing Grace but it has more than a few flaws, whereas I can name about 15 other films that came out this year that I thought were pretty near perfect, and a few others that were real masterpieces. Maybe in a different year AG would have been deserving, but as much as I liked it, I just don't think it measures up against the other films.

I'm not sure that's really a factor in this case. The majority of the films nominated for awards this year didn't/aren't expected to garner much of an audience. Amazing Grace has much more mass appeal than say, Eastern Promises, There Will Be Blood or I'm Not There.
HilJohn- 12-31-2007
No ... AG is not going to get any nominations for the "big" categories. You're both right Zoo and Jess ... it's a good movie, but not great, at least in terms of what the Academy members are looking for in film.
It does stand a chance, however, for costuming, set design and possibly cinematography. It's a well-crafted film and it's as good as it gets in those categories.
The bouncing timeline killed any chances for recognition in the overall major categories (screenplay, direction, best movie).
IG still has a lot of room for growth as an actor. He has potential, which is why most of us are here (I think) but he's not given any Oscar-worthy performances as of yet. He needs to take on a risky project to get noticed, but he's not doing anything risky (comic book and cartoonish characters do not count as "risky" ).

If we can't have 'risky', can we have 'riske'? Ioan, please?
